Tea and Biscuits Book Discussions: Old School Romance Worth Reading

by | Jan 29, 2024 | Tea and Biscuits Discussions | 8 comments

Welcome to another Tea and Biscuits Book Discussion. I haven’t done one of these in a while and thought it was about time to bring this topic to the table. This is a series I do normally every Monday talking about various issues. I would love your comments and responses and if you leave your email, you will receive responses or I will try to get to all of your comments.

Today I wanted to share my top picks for classic historical romances. These are romances that are published before 2000. These are more termed “Old Schooled”. I have started to see more interest in older historicals and wanted to share some of my personal favorites

If you like the settings that Joanne Shupe writes in, then look no further than this series by Meagan McKinnney. I absolutely loved this book. Its a bit angsty, but love the history and the characters are just fun to read.

This one has one of the most unique settings that I have ever read before. It basically is a gold rush setting. And even though its very old school, the romance is really solid in this one here.

I read this one a couple of years ago when the cover was redone and it was so action packed. The history in this book just comes alive in it and the romance is super swoon worthy!

This book is set in the middle-east and what an adventure. It has some fun alpha male vibes and some powerful plot developments.

This author is queen for historicals especially in the historical detail that she writes. These books just sweep you away in such a majestic manner.

This is the best book by this author and I will die on this hill. I love the premise of the story and their story is so fascinating. McNaught really handled the medieval setting just right in this one here.

this is one of my favorites from this author. It does have flowery writing, that is just how Woodiwiss writes, so keep that in mind when you read it. It deals with the normal and saxon conflicts.

After the first chapter of this book, you will be HOOKED!! I love how it begins and really sets the tone for the whole story. Its so dreamy and romantic and endearing.

This is a native american western. Its an epic love series between this beautiful couple. It really brings the beautiful traditions of both cultures in such a wonderful way and love their romantic journey in this series.

This is a sweet one but its pretty divisive which is more out of ppl not understanding the time it was written in. I had zero issues with it though. I love how protective and careful the hero is with the heroine and its such a gentle romance.

This book is BANANAS!! LOL But its addictive. Seriously if you are need of a page turner, PICK THIS BOOK UP! I couldn’t get enough of it.

This one is set in the tudor era which honestly is kinda hard to find books set in. Even though its a very romantic era ironically. I love the courting aspects and the courtly politics.

So tell me what do you think of what I have shared? Have you read and loved any of these? What are some of your favorite old school romances?

I have not read any of these. When I think of “old school” romances I loved, I would point to Nora Roberts, Kristan Higgins, Jill Shalvis, Brenda Novak, and Danielle Steel.

I’ve read a lot of books by some of these authors so I’m glad they made it to your list of favourites (Julie Garwood, Judith McNaught and Iris Johansen). I haven’t read these books in particular (strange), but you’ve got me curious 🙂 Thanks so much for sharing!! xo

I highly recommend you read these books by those authors. They are so so good. I am kinda shocked you never read Kingdom of Dreams though. If you haven’t….you need to change that. Its such fun.

I totally expected you to include a SEP book. I know you have been recently enjoying her books. I didn’t realize Wiggs was old school since I just discovered her books last year. I always think of Danielle Steel, Lisa Kleypas, SEP, Jennifer Cruise, Julia Quinn, and such

haha yeah I thought about doing contemporary, but back when I read these I was all about historical romance. I didn’t really start reading contemporary (other than my teen years) until about 5-6 years ago.

I do love so many of the oldies. Julie Garwood is one of my favorites. I just reread The Secret and Ransom. For me she’s one of those authors I can’t get enough of.

Yeah Julie Garwood is a classic and those medievals of hers so stand the test of time because she never really wrote consent issues. I wish she had never gone to suspense because that is when her writing really changed. Her best work in my opinion is her historical romance.

I am totally down with the Old School even some of the awkward stuff because they are written in a time when writing style was different. 🙂
