Recommend It: Underrated Authors I Adore + You NEED to Read

by | Jul 29, 2023 | Recommend It | 5 comments

This is a new feature I want to try to do on a more consistent basis, I have actually received such great feedback for this weekly post, so I will be doing this weekly. I am so excited as I always have such great recommendations as I read all over the genre and my hope is that I can share recs that are for all the sub genres if I can! The “Recommend It” feature, is where I will recommend romances based on a certain theme, trope or character type. If you have a trope or theme or character type you want me to put at the top of my list, I have a form that I have created that will just automatically upload into my spreadsheet and I will put it at the top of my list! I feel like as book bloggers, reviewers, readers, we all have great lists to share and this is what I hope I can do for any that want to expand their horizons in the romance genre.

So today I am going to do something a bit different and change some authors that I feel deserve more love, much more than all those hyped authors.

Historical Romance

Elizabeth Moss is such a delightful author. She also has some solid steam to her stories that are so wonderful to read.

Basically the queen of medieval indie romance!! Her books are amazing. I don’ know why I don’t read it more often. Her writing is super engaging, and explores so many eras in the medieval world. Its very refreshing from all of the regency stuff.

This author hasn’t written too much, but the books that she has written are so amazing to read. I love how she really pulls you into a story and there is always such a sense of adventure to them.

Rosanne Bittner is an author I will always defend! Her writing is fantastic and she writes such gritty reads and I love it.

This is an author that writes more old school but her books are always so fun in that she writes in settings many authors don’t brave. Like south Asia and the Middle East and even Africa and its super fascinating.

Marsha Canham is a delight to read! If you haven’t read her then I highly recommend you try her out.

Paranormal Romance

Kelly Meade hasn’t written too many but this trilogy is actually one of my favorite shifter romance series. And those of you who have read it know exactly why I love it so.

I haven’t seen anyone talk about this author but basically she writes erotic romance PNR. They are based around a family and are so full of interesting magical elements that really capture you attention.

There is something about these winged vampire warriors that I just love. And the books have the fated love trope and is a delight. The plot and world building are some of the best I have ever read.

If you LOVE vampire romance, than this is an author you need in your life. I adore how these books are written and boy are they addictive. You won’t be able to put it down once you start.

I would recommend this author if you like the latest series from Juliette Cross or the Molly Harper books. This is basically a PNR series with both vamps and shifters where we see a dating service of supernatural creatures and its so hilarious too. The humor is so great. This is the name of “Jessica Clare” just her PNR works.

I feel like I never see anyone talk about this author and she writes some great vampire romances. They are super atmospheric. So if you are looking for an author that has similar vibes as Jeaniene Frost, than I highly recommend her.

Fantasy Romance

This is an author that is difficult to categorize but she is a mix of both PNR and fantasy and love how she world builds and she mixes it in with strong elements of history and culture and writes diversely so well. She definitely deserves more recognition. Her world building is some of the best I have ever read.

If you are a fan of UF than this is an author that you really need to pick up and soon! I love how this one was written and has such a strong romance focus in it too! Which we need to see more UF of too.

This is a author that writes mythological fantasy and its so so delightful. I love how she crafter this series which led me to Sherrilyn Kenyon. And her writing style is so engaging.

One of the best fantasy authors in my opinion and she gets so overlooked. You all raving about fourth wing when instead you should be trying some of these other authors that know how to write a perfect fantasy world.

This is a high fantasy series with engaging writing and diverse characters throughout the series and a certain splice of life feel to the story. The hero is a alpha mellow warlord and the heroine is a princess and healer for her people. They have a arranged marriage of sorts and love their story. This author writes such a wonderful blend of characters.

CL Wilson is one of the best epic fantasy authors in the genre. If you have not read her, you need to RIGHT NOW!!! I also love how honest she is with her readers whenever there are delays on her books.

Contemporary Romance

This is military romance in its best form!! There are plenty of romantic suspense books with military focus but not enough military romance only. And I love how rich and endearing this author’s writing is.

Linda Kage is QUEEN!!! I especially adore how she writes New Adult. Its so delightful. One her writing is super engaging. And then she balances out angst with laughter so well. And the drama and angst she puts in makes sense. Its not just for effect or reaction for the reader like so many NA have. And she tackles diversity aspects on ocassion too.

I feel like I never see this author anywhere and she just writes some great sports romances….normally focused on fast cars. And I just love how relatable her characters are.

This is an author that writes both contemporary and historicals. She tends to focus on family feuds and they are so so fun. She was one of my first introductions to contemporary westerns. These books are so funny and it has some top notch angst in them.

I adore this author so much, she tends to write gritty contemporaries. Normally her characters have some sort of PTSD that they are working through and I really love seeing that and there are such great friendship bonds that are implemented.

Beth Kery is such a wonder to read! Beth Kery writes a mix of contemporary and erotic romance. She has a classy feel to the story. I love her writing style and if you like diverse pairings, she also writes these as well.

If you would like to give me your requests for what type of recs you would like in a recommend it post, I have a link HERE so that I can put them at the top of the line!

So what do you think of my recommendations for “underrated authors”? What are some of your favorites that I need to add to my TBR? Let me know in the comments below!

Oh wow. Thanks for sharing this! XO

So many new authors for me to discover (and maybe start stalking lol). So glad Aja made the list. I’ve been meaning to try Elisabeth Naughton so hopefully this post keeps her in my thoughts.

Okay, so Jeffe Kennedy… I think I’ve seen some to their books, but didn’t add them. From your words, I’m guessing that was a mistake. Looking into them now.

I’ve only read the contemporary romance authors: Beth Kery, Jessica Scott, and Erin McCarthy. I enjoyed all three authors. I’ve read a lot of Jessica Scott’s romances. I enjoyed all of them! I’ll have to check out the other authors.

I feel like Harper Sloan was super popular back in the beginnings of the NA romance and then just kind of disappeared off my radar.

Hooray for spotlighting some underrated authors! I read a few by Jessica Scott years ago. My husband was still active duty at the time and I liked the military romances she wrote. 🙂
