Romanceopoly 2023

by | Nov 28, 2022 | Reading Challenges | 7 comments

Romanceopoly has come back and I can’t tell you all how excited I am that the gals at Under The Covers Book Blog brought this back! Romanceopoly was such a fun challenge, the goal of it is to read outside your comfort zone, to try books you normally wouldn’t try out, and to bring balance to your reading. Now, this is specifically for romance reading, and I adore all of the categories. However, you can easily adapt it to general genres in fiction if you wanted to if you aren’t a big romance reader. If you love Monopoly the game, then this reading challenge is just for YOU! They got so creative with this and I love how well it’s connected to the Monopoly game, and there are various levels of difficulty and you can adapt it to whichever you would like. What I love about this reading challenge, is how it pushes one to have a more well-rounded type of reading.

So what is Romanceopoly? It’s a yearly reading challenge that is based upon the game of Monopoly—-Romance style. You throw the dice and move around the board, and the square you land on determines what challenge card you pick up. On each card, determines what type of book you read. You can either just randomly choose a book either in the subgenre or the challenge on the card that matches the square that you pick up. There are two levels of difficulty for the squares. Each square has a subgenre you can just pick a book for OR you can follow with the challenge on the card. I have an example below of some of the cards that they have for the game. (If you choose to do it all physically, the back of the cards, are lined so you can put a TBR of books to choose from for each challenge card). There are multiple digital tracking options (which I will explain below to track your TBR and books read for each challenge.) If you want to see the full list of the challenges, check them out HERE

Romanceopoly has so many options on how you play, you can start easy or build up your difficulty. If you want to read the rules they are HERE There are two routes that you can take around the board either the scenic route or the direct route. One is where you use dice to play (SCENIC) or go one space at a time (DIRECT). It’s all up to YOU on how you want to play it. I have played in the past both ways, however, I adored the scenic route the most. It feels closest to actually playing a game which just makes it more fun. They have 8 kinds of boards that you can choose from. With both light and dark skin, and four types of hair color. So you can just choose whichever one you would like. They have only one size so you can make it as big as you would like.

Tracking Your Progress

There are multiple ways to track your progress. They provide all the ways to get access to all of these. It’s up to you which way you want to do it. If you want to do it all physically, they have a fun printable tracker that you can use. You can do ALL digital if you want, or mix and match whatever is easiest for you to use. It’s highly adaptable to whatever way you want to use it. I recommend exploring them and seeing which one you would like to use. There are also tutorial videos on all the options HERE to show you how to use them if you need it.

  • Storygraph
  • Digital Tracker
  • Printable Tracker
  • Notion
  • Airtable

They also have an image and HTML code to showcase your participation in Romanceopoly on your blog as well which you can find on their website.

My Plans For Romanceopoly:

I will be doing a mix of digital and physical. I will be physically printing a board and keeping it on my desk and will be rolling twice a week every Saturday evening before I put my TBR together for the week. I will be printing the board on cardstock and then gluing it to some stockboard. I will be tracking through Storygraph. I will be taking the scenic route for this. As I have done both ways, it’s just so much more fun to do it with dice, as it feels closer to feeling like I am playing monopoly. I have already put together a TBR on Storygraph. What is super nice about Storygraph is how easy it is to put together a TBR. You just join the challenge, and then you can add the books to the challenge. Once you add them, it shows your TBR, and then once you read the book, it will update the challenge automatically. I have added 12 books for each challenge, I know that seems like a lot, but I can be a mood reader so this way I have lots of options and will choose whichever book I feel like I am in the mood for. For the library prompts (there are three spaces for library options, which are free choice), I have added in Dark Romance, Erotic Romance, and Women’s Fiction. You can choose whichever you would like. I have implemented Urban Fantasy and some Steampunk into “Haunted House” which is either another Monster or Spooky option. As I don’t care to read monster romance, I decided to add in UF/Steampunk into it as its a sub genre I have been meaning to read more of.

So tell me what do you think of this reading challenge? Are you joining in 2023? If so, tell me your plans for it! Let me know in the comments below!
