August 2022: Monthly Recap

by | Sep 1, 2022 | At A Glance | 9 comments

So August was such a interesting month, I am not sure what to even say about it to be honest because while nothing super thrilling happened unlike the BOOKS I read haha it was still eventful and my reading was lower this month. I am not in a slump though haha not really anyway. I might have binged on some TV shows this month which is evidence on how much TV can factor into your reading. So my dad got me hooked on two new TV shows. One is “Strange New Worlds” which is the newest Star Trek and I LOVED this one. I was highly disappointed in Picard and Discovery, and this show just had that classic Star Trek feel to it so I truly enjoyed it and I am really loving the romance so that is a plus. Then we have the new Prime Chris Pratt TV show “Terminal List” Which is a political military thriller. So if you like Tom Clancy stuff, then this show is definitely going to be for you. Also Passionflix had their final part release of Gabriel’s Rapture this month, so I might have binged on both movies as well. Then I realized I hadn’t watched the latest season of Blue Bloods so of course I was like well my reading numbers are crap this month haha so might as well binge it and finish it off for the month. But now I am done with TV for a long while haha and excited to get back to reading for September. I did read some great books this month and I also got some coloring pages finished as well. There was some drama in the bookish world (but when is there never drama these days). Also this month was also busy as I was working at getting all the stepback photos from Goodreads saved. Not sure if any of you know, but starting the first of September, no one will be able to access stepback photos anymore. So I pretty much plan on implementing something on this site, not sure what exactly, but I want to have a place that readers can access stepback covers.

Nothing is fair in war.

Jonathan King is every bit his last name.
Powerful.
Untouchable.
Corrupted.
He’s also my dead sister’s husband and way older than me.
When I first met him as a clueless child, I thought he was a god.
Now, I have to confront that god to protect my business from his ruthless grip.
Little did I know that declaring a war on the king will cost me everything.
When Jonathan covets something, he doesn’t only win, he conquers.
Now, he has his sights on me.
He wants to consume not only my body, but also my heart and my soul.
I fight, but there’s no escaping the king in his kingdom…

Reign of a King is the first part of a duet and is not standalone.

This is a book that I wasn’t expected to love as much as I did. This author in the past has been a hit or miss for me, so my expectations were lower, but this one swept me away and had such a psychological thriller vibe to the romance that just had me hooked all the way through. I can’t recommend this one enough if you are a fan of dark romance.

Aida Palmer performs a spirit medium show onstage at Chinatown’s illustrious Gris-Gris speakeasy. However, her ability to summon (and expel) the dead is more than just an act. Winter Magnusson is a notorious bootlegger who’s more comfortable with guns than ghosts. Unfortunately for him, he’s the recent target of a malevolent hex that renders him a magnet for hauntings. After Aida’s supernatural assistance is enlisted to banish the ghosts, her spirit-chilled aura heats up as the charming bootlegger casts a different sort of spell on her. On the hunt for the curseworker responsible for the hex, Aida and Winter become drunk on passion. And the closer they become, the more they realize they have ghosts of their own to exorcise…

This one BLEW me away!! I absolutely adored this one and is one of my favorite historicals from this year and not just this month. I had so much fun with the hints of mystery, gothic paranormal themes and the setting in San Francisco in the 1920’s. I love this era, its purely fascinating and Jenn Bennett did a brilliant job writing this story. I can’t wait to explore this trilogy.

Arrochar Adair has loved her brother’s ex-bodyguard and best friend, Mac Galbraith, for years. Once upon a time, she was too young for him, but now that she’s a mature woman in her thirties, Arro can see no issue with their difference in age. Yet something deeper, a problem much more difficult to surmount, is keeping them apart.

Mac Galbraith remembers clearly the night Arro became everything to him, no longer just his best friend and boss’s younger sister. However, having made many mistakes over the years, there is one mistake Mac is determined not to make: to believe that he is worthy of Arrochar Adair. Allowing them to grow closer during his daughter, Robyn’s, return has proven his undoing. And when Arro forces the subject of their relationship, his response pushes her away. He just never meant for it to destroy them completely.

Devastated by Mac’s final rejection, Arro is determined to move on without him in her life, though he seems intent on staying put. And when the Adair family face a new threat, one that may have ties to Mac’s past, Arro can’t seem to be rid of the man. In fact, Mac will do anything to protect her.

But with so much hurt between them, will Arro let Mac close enough to guard her from their enemy… before it’s too late?

If you are a fan of this author, and haven’t discovered the charm of this series, then I can’t recommend these enough. This had such fun angst and the chemistry was off the charts. The sexual tension was done so well and the suspense plot was simply superb. I am just loving that this author is writing this series, set in Scotland. It’s so atmospheric.

I love that you had a great month. 34 books ain’t nothing to frown at lol. I am a huge Trekkie so I’ll be looking into Strange New Worlds (thanks for the heads up). I can only hope September is even better for you! xo

I liked that Bennett series. Kind of wish there were more books. It amazes me how the Star Trek franchise grew considering the original was only on for three seasons

Goodreads is really taking away so many features that they’re going to start driving away people.

Yeah I agree. I think there is a way to make the aesthetic more pleasing (and it is long overdue) while also having all the other features right? They are just deleting a lot of cool things and I am really not liking it. I will stick with GoodReads because they still have more than other sites but if they keep getting rid of all the features that set them apart then more people will switch over to other sites.
