Tea and Biscuits Book Discussions: Delicious Covers and Why we love em’

Tea & BiscuitsBook Discussion

I know I really shouldn’t judge a book by a cover by I so dang well do!! I can either love em or hate em. And there have been times where I didn’t like the cover and read the book and loved it. Other times I loved the cover and really didn’t like the book. So it can go both ways but in all honesty if I see a pretty cover I will grab it up more often times than not. There are many different types of covers I like though. They don’t have to be the same or have a similar style, but they need to be something that the eye is drawn to.

What I love most is when a cover relates with the story. So it bugs the hell out of me when I see a heroine in the story with red hair but on the cover she has blonde hair—huh??!! Just doesn’t work out for me. Or if there are certain designs on the cover that doesn’t seem to relate with the story at all. For example Jessica Clare’s books…now she does fantastic work and I have loved everything she has written, but most of the time I scratch my head at the covers because they really don’t have anything to do with the stories. Or if they do, I honestly can decide how it works out.

My favorite aspect in covers, are couple poses. This is a win win for me every single time. I think why I love it most is because I am a hopeless romantic, and since I read romance the story is about two people who fall in love. So I love seeing two people on the cover. Of course I don’t mind the pretty dresses or the gorgeous hunks….but there is something uniquely special about seeing a romantic couple pose. There are many different kinds out there too. Now I fell in love with romance covers when I was a teenager, so I like the older covers just as much as the newer ones. I know not many will agree with me on that….but I love them and am dang proud of it!! Sometimes when I do a review for a book, I will use the cover I like the most and most of the times when its a re release of a older published book…I use the older cover. Like for example the Lisa Kleypas historical’s. They have been re doing all the covers for her books, and yes the dressses are pretty and fun but in all honesty….I much prefer the older covers to the new ones. They are classic and they come with stepback covers (which is one of my favorite things) I have no clue why but I just love the stepbacks. Of course, most of her books I own on paperback so I can enjoy the older covers to my heart content.

What is truly wonderful about covers is the way they can portray a story in the right light or the wrong light. There are times that if it has the right cover that matches the tone of the story just right—it really sets up the story for the reader.

I have to admit, I don’t love romance novel covers. Well, that’s not true. Some of them I adore! I actually love the cover for A Rogue By Any Other Name by Maclean. Of course I didn’t care much for that story, but I love the cover. I don’t always love the pretty dress covers, there is something just wonderful about that one, though.

I also really like Lia Riley’s Brightwater covers. They are adorable, and they really reflect the story, which I agree, is so important. When that book cover is just right, it’s fantastic! I love the cover for When a Scot Ties the Knot too.

I admit, I’m not madly in love with the cover for In Bed with a Highlander. It just doesn’t work for me. But that’s me. I’m so glad you love it, because the book is AMAZING! I do love a good romantic pose, too.

I’m drawn more by colors than poses. I also like anything that has a new twist to the usual cover. Otherwise I forget what book I’ve already read. lol

A pretty or intriguing cover will grab my eye but it’s rare when I buy a book just for teh cover alone. The blurb has to appeal to me also. I admit, I have passed on books, not even bothered to read the blurb, if I found the cover ugly or offensive. So in my own fashion, I’m a cover whore. But a good cover is no guarantee that I will like the book, it’s just the hook that lures me in.

Like you, I want the cover to tell me something about the story and to be accurate, or at least reasonably so. So yes, if the heroine is a red-head then the cover model shouldn’t be a blonde. If the hero is a short Black man, don’t put a tall white man on the cover. There’s just no good reason for that nonsense.

When I review, I use the cover for the edition that I read. In fact, I’m anal about that. I added a bunch of books to my goodreads shelves and some were so old they didn’t have ISBNs. I had to hunt to find the editions with the right covers. I agree with you that sometimes I prefer an older cover to a ewer cover, but occasionally I find that I like the new cover better. 🙂

Hey! I picked Trouble With Texas Cowboys for my Pinterest Review Books cover b/c I loved it. Glad to see it in your favs. I confess that I love what Sourcebooks has done with the new Rosanne Bittner books. I loved what Penguin did with Charlaine Harris’ Midnight, TX series putting the mystery clues right in the cover.

Like you, I’m influenced by a cover and I very much love when the cover has something to do with the story that is at leas obvious after reading the book. And as you say, if they use models, at least let them have some semblance to the characters. I thought that trend of erotics to have objects in their covers was odd, but then Roni Loren explained that it kept people from freaking out over erotic romance covers being too much for the shelf. I get that, I guess.

    Nice topic!

I have to agree with you when the book describes the character but the cover model is completely different it just confuses me. I’m a cover lover, it’s the first thing I look at and can really draw me in.

I hate when covers don’t match the story. Like you mentioned, the character looking different. So annoying. Covers are important even though they probably shouldn’t be.

I love talking about covers and I definitely judge books by a cover. I think a cover can be an important aspect of if I want to read a book. Sometimes when scrolling through netgalley for example the cover can make the difference between whether I scroll past it or take a look at the blurb. Same goes for when scrolling through my bloglovin feed.

It also bugs me when the cover doens’t match the story, I think it’s important for a cover to match the story. It’s more fun that way, I like discovering why the covers fits the book while reading. Same with the title. I also like seeing couple poses on covers. I especially like the more original poses, intimate poses or those almost kiss poses. Great Post!

Covers are some of my favorite things! I love finding little details in them that I only notice after I’ve finished the book. I think my favorite types are the pretty dress covers because I am a costume fangirl. Like you, I am always irritated by covers that don’t match the story inside.
