Tea and Biscuits Book Discussions: Goodreads Choice Awards Predictions

by | Nov 8, 2021 | Tea and Biscuits Discussions | 5 comments

Tea and Biscuits Book Discussions is a feature here on Addicted To Romance where there is talk of books, blogging, and reading topics….so come on in and join in on the discussion

Today I would like to do something different and fun, and I do want to clarify that I saw this idea from a couple of booktubers and thought that it would be fun to be able to do a post on this especially since I am sure it will be happening pretty soon here. So as many of you are aware, there is an event that happens on Goodreads every year and normally it starts in early November so I am expecting to see something this week or next week at the latest. And I will mention that I do NOT agree with any of the options that show up on this End of Year Awards that happen on Goodreads. In recent years, its been books that aren’t really romances in my opinion. And I do feel like it doesn’t even come close to representing the genre. But it is the way they implement these award choices, I would love for them to have a “Women’s Fiction” genre section so that it would separate that genre from Romance. Because even though Women’s Fiction does have a love interest and a HEA, the romance is the back seat to the story. So I do wish they could categorize it a bit better. But the reason you get so many winners that are with the Illustrated Covers are because people that read those aren’t just romance readers, you get readers outside of the genre that read those as well. So it isn’t a favorite of many romance readers because many of us feel it doesn’t represent our genre fully.

Today however, I am going to share the options that I think will be in the choices and my predictions and what I think Goodreads will showcase here. These are books that have the top number of ratings for the year and then a few write in’s that I think could make it.

79,595 ratings

This is only two months OLD and already look how many ratings it has. So this would be at the top of my list on my prediction of winning. Not sure I will read it, I am waiting on some reviews of other readers that have a similar reading tastes.

69.015 Rating

This I believe was very popular because the first book this author did, was so well loved. I am not planning on reading this one anytime soon, I just haven’t heard too many good things about it.

36,833 ratings

Talia Hibbert has been making the top of these lists in recent years so don’t be surprised if you see this one.

77,538 ratings

This one came out earlier this year and has high ratings so its definitely going to make this list.

46,728 ratings

Christina Lauren ALWAYS makes this list, I would be shocked if they didn’t make the list. I haven’t read them since they started doing these new brand of books but I know many readers really enjoy their work.

30,016 ratings

This is most definitely women’s fiction, it is not a romance. It has a romance but it definitely is in the backseat. The focus is the heroine’s personal journey. But this author has a very established base and even though this was my least favorite of this author, it was likable. Just I wasn’t in the right mood for it.

40,141 ratings

This is an author that is NOT for me, trust me I have tried reading so many of her books and her writing I never get engaged in. So I want to read this but won’t be because I know I won’t enjoy it that much. But its highly popular in the community currently so I know this will make a top list in the awards.

220,647 ratings

I will admit I don’t understand the hype surrounding this author but she gets a TON of readership in her base. But I have a feeling this one will be close to being a winner.

33,724 ratings

This only came out a little over a month  ago so its been highly popular and I have seen this one all over Tik Tok. So it definitely has those aspects that many love. It is one that is on my “maybe” list. I have heard its an actual from com and I love some fun witch times.

29,593 ratings

This one came out this summer and has been all over Tik Tok and I think this one has a chance of winning that isn’t illustrated. I would love for this one to win but I doubt it will come close but it might be in the top options.

7,303 ratings

When I saw the number of ratings for this one, I will be honest, I was shocked. This book was all over the place when it was released. Very RARELY do historical romance titles even come close to making it. It is possible, but the way they do these awards, it won’t make it but it might come close. We shall see. (I would jump over the moon though if it did)

21,850 ratings

I had to finish this off with a LJ Shen because she is one of the top indie authors in romance and even with the scandals in the past year or so, it doesn’t appear to be hurting her too much.

So out of ALL of these options what do you think my prediction will be out of them? From what I have seen all over blogs and social media and booktok and booktube and just all of the bookish places this is my prediction to be the top read of the year:

The Winner Prediction:

Now I could be wrong about this one, but considering how popular this one has been since it was released just tells me that I think this is more loved. Now the runner-up, would definitely be “People We Meet on Vacation” Now this one could be the winner, but I have seen more mixed reviews for Emily Henry’s book than for Ali Hazelwood. In fact, I have hardly seen anything negative about “The Love Hypothesis” so that is why I would predict that it would be the winner. But we shall see what happens.

So what do you think of my predictions here? Do you have your own predictions? What books do you think will make it to the top for the year?

I anticipate some award for The Love Hypothesis. I loved it! It was definitely romance too.

I love this post and agree there are flaws with the GR awards. I always vote but never get behind the GR awards. The books I like hardly win. However, I did absolutely love The Love Hypothesis. I read it before I knew the hype and was surprised how much I loved it. I also loved Eve Brown – I adore that entire series. I also loved Donut Fall in Love by Jackie Lau, but that’s really new, so probably won’t be on the list, Accidentally Engaged by Farah Heron, First Comes Like by Alisha Rai, and You Spin Me by Karen Grey (this one is self-published and not as widely know/read).

Fun idea to hold a pre-GR vote speculation. I didn’t read The Love Hypothesis, but saw several favorite blogs give it 5 stars and rav on it. Honestly, I rarely read the popular ones that make the voting lists. I do write-ins and vote for fun.

Yes Sophia….You and I are both the same way in these aspects. I thought this would be fun (even though I won’t vote for any of these apart from the Kleypas) But I do feel like these are overhyped like Emily Henry. We shall see how close my prediction will be to the real thing.

I know the GR awards have had their share of criticism the last few years. I don’t pay much attention to them but I do agree that it seems women’s fiction often get labeled as romance and gets lumped in that award category. I enjoy women’s fiction, but it’s not romance. And I’m sure it’s tough for romance authors to see general fiction or women’s fiction win in a category that they don’t even belong in.

I haven’t read Emily Henry but her books have never sounded like straight romance to me. More like WF. And I’m sure The Love Hypothesis will make it far… it’s been everywhere this year.
