Tea and Biscuits Book Discussions 3 Star Ratings

by | Oct 1, 2018 | Tea and Biscuits Discussions | 0 comments

Welcome to the feature “Tea and Biscuits Book Discussions” where every monday we get together to talk about issues in the bookish community and our love of books and romance.

This week I want to talk about three star ratings….the good and the bad and the way that everyone tends to view them including authors and publishers and fellow readers.

Contrary to what most people think —-three star ratings are actually positive ratings, at least for myself. It doesn’t mean the book was bad or that the reader didn’t enjoy the book. Now if its below a three star than that probably means it wasn’t for the reader or just had too many issues for the reader to enjoy it. But for myself, when I rate a book a three star than what does it mean? Honestly,  it means I enjoyed it, that it was pleasant and had some great attributes but there were some aspects of the story or the characters or the pacing of the book that didn’t work for me. But as an overall look….a nice story.

I really would like to see more positive talk surrounding three star ratings or in my case….blossoms or since its autumn….pumpkin carriages. 🙂 I believe authors and publishers need to understand that a three star rating is a good rating and not a rating to complain about. On ocassion I know of some authors that will be very negative when they see a three star and tend to put the reader down about it and this is shameful. I don’t want to list any names of authors or even publishing houses that do this because I don’t want to point fingers, but I would like it if authors would be more understanding and see that not everyone is going to four or five star their book. That a three star rating can be very beneficial for their writing.

I have found that I appreciate three star ratings and reviews when I am browsing for my next read, as long as the review is informative and gracious, then I appreciate it. I like seeing the honesty and the frank talk you find in them and it helps me decided to read a book as much as the four and five star reviews do. I believe that sometimes we fear reading three star reviews. I know I used to but then I realized why I am being so apprehensive about a 3 star review…..does that mean I shouldn’t look into the book? But the more I read 3 star reviews it made me realize that these are still books to be read and to be enjoyed and we should still give these books a chance. We all have different tastes when it comes to reading, so of course we aren’t all going to love the same book. So I like looking at these 3 star reviews and see why the reader rated it a 3 instead of a 4 or a 5 or even a 2. What is the reason behind it? And realized that certain aspects that may bother some readers, wouldn’t bother me. So I have come to have a more understanding view on those 3 star reviews and I tend to enjoy reading them more and more because it gives me a balanced look on a story and helps me decided whether to pick up a book or not.

Below I want to share some of my books that I enjoyed quite a bit and rated it only a 3 star.
