Tea and Biscuits Book Discussion: Passages and Moments That Are Addicting

Now what is it that makes us cry in a story, or makes us giggle or even burst out in laughter in public while reading? A certain passage or moment that are compelling and emotional. When reading a romance, this is what I look forward to…these special and unique moments. This is what makes a story go from being standard to spectacular and wins your heart over. Over the years, I have been quite impressed with the way those certain authors can have me so hooked into a story that I can’t put it down….or I will stay up all night reading it. Its so fun to delve into a story completely and this is what makes reading so addicting at times. I want to share with y’all some of my favorite moments and quotes that have won me over. Have any of you read these books? Do you remember these fun or tender moments?

Personal Favorites:

Blue Eyed DevilBlue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas –There are so many great moments between Hardy and Haven. This is one of my favorite books by this author, which is saying quite a bit since I LOVE many of her books…well all of them. LOL However Hardy and Haven have one of those relationships that are so compelling, emotional and funny! I have laughed and cried all through this book. Its emotional–quite a bit at times, very poignant but oh boy the humor….the HUMOR!! Below are some moments between her best gay friend (love him), her brother and Hardy too. 🙂

“I could apologize for all the women I knew before you. But I’m not going to.”
“Didn’t ask you to,” I said sullenly.
His hand slipped under the sheet, gently sweeping over me. “I learned something from every woman I’ve been with. And I needed to learn a lot before I was ready for you.”
I scowled. “Why? Because I’m complicated? Difficult?” I fought to keep my breathing steady as he cupped my breast and shaped it.
He shook his head. “Because there’s so much I want to do for you. So many ways I want to please you.” He bent to kiss me, and brushed the tip of his nose against mine in a playful nudge. “Those women were just practice for you.”
“Good line,” I said grudgingly

“No,” I said automatically, “don’t do anything about Dad. You can’t fix my relationship with him.”
“I can block or run interference.”
“Thanks, Jack, but I don’t need blocking, and I really don’t need any more interference.”
He looked annoyed. “Well, why did you waste all that time complaining to me if you didn’t want me to do something about it?”
“I don’t want you to fix my problems. I just wanted you to listen.”
“Hang it all, Haven, talk to a girlfriend if all you want is a pair of ears. Guys hate it when you give us a problem and then don’t let us do something about it. It makes us feel bad. And then the only way to make ourselves feel better is to rip a phone book in two or blow something up. So let’s get this straight — I’m not a good listener. I’m a guy.”
“Yes you are.” I stood and smiled. “Want to buy me a drink at an after work bar?”
“Now you’re talking,” my brother said, and we left the office.

“No, that’s what he wants you to think. But don’t believe it for a minute. It’s a front, that aw-shucks-I’m-just-a-redneck routine. He does it to set people up. And then he goes in for the kill.” “You’re saying Hardy’s some kind of master manipulator or something?” I asked skeptically. “He’s from a trailer park, Todd.” “The only person I’ve ever seen who’s almost as good at that kind of calculated underplaying . . . almost . . . is your father.” I gave a disbelieving laugh, but I felt a chill run down my back. “Do you think he’s a bad guy?” “No. But there’s a lot going on under the surface. You watch his eyes. Even when he’s doing his regular-guy routine, he’s taking measure, learning, every damn second.” “You got all that from talking about sofas with him?” Todd smiled. “People reveal a lot when discussing their personal taste. And I picked up a lot by watching him watch you. I think you’re in for a time of it with him, sweetheart.”

“I’m not that complicated, Haven. The truth is, I’ve wanted you ever since I met you in that damned wine cellar. Because I got a bigger charge out of that five minutes than I have with any woman before or since…”

I feel the curve of his smile against my skin. But as he lifts his head and looks into my eyes, his grin fades. “Haven . . . I don’t know if I’m going to be a good father. What if I don’t do it right?”
I am touched by Hardy’s concern, his constant desire to be the man he thinks I deserve. Even when we disagree, I have no doubt that I am cherished. And respected. And I know that neither of us takes the other one for granted.
I have come to realize you can never be truly happy unless you’ve known some sorrow. All the terrible things Hardy and I have gone through in our lives have created the spaces inside where happiness can live. Not to mention love. So much love that there doesn’t seem to be room for bitterness in either of us.
“I think the fact that you’re worrying about it at all,” I say, “means you’ll probably be great at it.”

I no longer believed in the idea of soul mates, or love at first sight. But I was beginning to believe that a very few times in your life, if you were lucky, you might meet someone who was exactly right for you. Not because he was perfect, or because you were, but because your combined flaws were arranged in a way that allowed two separate beings to hinge together

Texas Glory by Lorraine Heath–This is a story that was so emotional for me, but I loved every single moment. Out of all the books this authorTexas Glory 2 has written, this is my favorite. The characters, the plot, the setting….and most especially the romance. Both Dallas and Delia have their rough moments and there is a point where it almost breaks them….but love wins. Don’t you just love it when that happens?

“Stay”The strangled word, spoken in anguish, tore at her heart, ripped through her resolve. She swiped at the tears raining over her cheeks and slowly turned, forcing the painful truth past her lips.

“I can’t stay.. I can no longer give you what you want. I can’t give you a son.”Dallas stepped off the veranda and extend a bouquet of wildflowers toward her

“Then stay and give me what I need.”

Her heart lurched at the abundance of flowers wilting within his smothering grasp. She shook her head vigorously. “You don’t need me. there are a dozen eligible women in Leighton who would happily give you a son and within the month there will be at least a dozen more–“

“I’ll never love any of them as much as I love you. I know that as surely as I know the sun will come up in the morning.”Her breath caught, her trembling increased, words lodged in her throat. He loved her? She watched as he swallowed. “I know I’m not an easy man. I don’t expect you to ever love me, but if you’ll tolerate me, I give you my word that I’ll do whatever it takes to make you happy–“

Quickly stepping forward, she pressed her shaking fingers against his warm lips. “My God, don’t you know that I love you? Why do you think I’m leaving? I’m leaving because I do love you–so much. Dallas, I want you to have your dream, I want you to have your son.”

Closing his eyes, he laid his roughened hand over hers where it quivered against his lips and pressed a kiss against the heart of her palm. “I can’t promise that I won’t have days when I’ll look toward the horizon and feel the aching emptiness that comes from knowing we’ll never have a child to pass our legacy on to.”

Opening his eyes, he captured her gaze. “But I know the emptiness you’ll leave behind will eat away at me every minute of every day. When I was a boy, I went to war searching for glory. I didn’t find it. I came here, thinking i’d find glory if I built a ranching empire or a thriving town.” He trailed his thumb over her lips. “Instead I discovered that I didn’t even know what glory was, not until you smiled at me for the first time with no fear in your eyes. A hundred years from now, everything I’ve worked so hard to build will be nothing more than dust blowing in the wind, but if I can spend my life loving you, I’ll die a wealthy man, a contented man,” Tears overflowed and spilled onto her cheeks.

“Stay with me.” he said She nodded. His mouth swooped down to cover hers, kissing her deeply, warmly. He had kissed her before, so many times before, but never like this…as though her mouth were the only one he’d ever known, as though her lips were the only ones he’d ever teased, as though her kiss were the only one that would ever satisfy him.  She braced her palms on either side of his face and held his unwavering gaze.

“Dallas, are you sure you can give up your dream without coming to hate me?”

“You were my dream, Dee. I just didn’t know it. the part of me that I was always searching for.”

Austin could do little more than stare at the woman. “It’s a prairie dog,” he reminded her.

Cautiously, she brushed her fingers over its head. “It’s just a baby. Please help her.”

Dee was looking at him with so much hope in her big brown eyes that he couldn’t do what he knew needed to be done. He slipped his gun into his holster. Thank God, she was married to his brother and not to him. Dallas could break her heart. Austin wouldn’t.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

Grimacing, he considered returning his mouth to hers and kissing her until she forgot the question and his strange behavior, but he had to know the truth. Dammit, he had to know. “Amelia told me that her toes curl when Houston kisses her. I was just trying to see if your toes curl when I kiss you.”

She turned a lovely shade of rose and rolled her shoulders toward her chin. “My whole body curls when you kiss me.”

“Your whole body?”

She nodded quickly.”Every inch.”

“Well, hell,” he said as he settled his mouth greedily over hers with plans to keep her body tightly curled for the remainder of the night.

The Pirate lordThe Pirate Lord by Sabrina Jeffries–Now this is one of those pirate romances that are one of the best I have ever read. Full of funny moments, romantic and silly, engaging and fun. It has a more lighter feel to it than other pirate romances I have read. We have more than one romance that happens in this one, and I love seeing that. But the main story between Gideon and Sara is so sweet at times. These two are so great together.

He twirled one coppery lock around his finger, and that seemed to rouse her from her stunned silence. “Stop that,” she whispered, a troubled expression crossing her face. “Why?” he smoothed her hair down over one shoulder, thinking that she had the creamiest skin he’d ever seen, skin that was just begging to be touched. She gasped when he stroked one finger up along the curved contours of her neck. “It’s not..proper,” she said. That made him smile. “Proper? We crossed the line from proper to improper right after you left the Chastity. You’re on a pirate ship, remember? You’re alone in a cabin with a notorious pirate captain..you’ve lost your proper little cap..and I’m about to kiss you.” As soon as he’d said the words, he knew they were a mistake-and not because of the outrage that filled her face. It would be dangerous to kiss her. She wasn’t the woman for him. But he had to taste her once, just a little taste. So before a protest could even leave her lips, he brought his mouth down to hers.

“How dare you give the poor woman trouble over those nasty biscuits! If you made biscuits worth eating, sir, perhaps she wouldn’t throw them to the fish!” He blinked his eyes in astonishment. “Biscuits worth eating? I’ll have you know, madam, that I bake the best biscuit on the high seas!” “That’s not saying much, considering that ship’s biscuits are notoriously awful!” “It’s alright, Louisa, you needn’t defend me—“ Sara began. Louisa just ignored her. “Those biscuits were so hard, I could scarcely choke them down. As for that stew—” “Look here, you disrespectful harpy,” the cook said, punctuating his words with loud taps of his cane. “There ain’t nothin’ wrong with Silas Drummond’s stew, and I defy any man—or woman—to make a better one!”

“Must the women keep curtseying to me as if I were some deity?” he grumbled. “Yes. It’s due you because of your rank.” An impish smile crossed her face. “You didn’t even have to brandish your saber in front of them to get it. Fancy that. It must be a new experience for you.” He cast her a sidelong glance. “If you don’t show me some respect, my dear wife, I’ll have to brandish my . . . er . . . saber in front of you later when we’re alone.

Turbulent Sea by Christine Feehan–oh what a story!!! This is where we get to see the first Prakenskii brother and the youngest one. Turbulent SeaIllya is one of my favorite characters that Feehan has ever written. Both Jolie and Illya are so good for each other. They have powerful chemistry and fight for each other not just when it comes to danger but also for one another emotionally and mentally.

“I want you more than I’ve ever wanted anything in my life, but you were hoping to have sex and walk away without ever looking back. That’s not what’s between us. That’s how you’re looking at me – at us – and I’m not willing for that to be all there is.”

She’d been a shock to him, when he thought himself impossible to shock. She wasn’t a perfect angel from heaven—one he couldn’t relate to—she was human. Sexy as hell. Flirty. She’d drive a man mad in seconds. She was fiercely loyal. A tigress when it came to her family, and he’d begun brooding over that trait in her, drawn to it, drawn to her capacity to protect those she loved. She knew what it was like to need to do whatever it took to protect those weaker than she was. And he desperately needed someone to save him—to love him—to be as fierce for him as Joley Drake was in the protection of her sisters.

Joley was more than just his—she was so deep inside of him she was a part of him—and just as she had protected him, he would protect her with his last breath.

Twice TemptedTwice Tempted by Jeaniene Frost–Love Leila and Vlad…boy the fireworks and the emotion. Even though I love Cat and Bones (who doesn’t?) but there is something so much more to Vlad and Leila I just soak up more. Jeaniene Frost is still finishing up the series of these two. But I have loved what she has written so far, and Twice Tempted is my favorite of the three books. This is the book that plays a pivotal role in their relationship. They get challenged and tested and come out on top.

“Hi. Cat was just keeping me company until you came back.”

He glanced in the direction she’d just disappeared to before returning his attention to me.

“Fourteen hundred and thirty-one.”

I blinked. “What’s that?”

“The year I was born, which is not, as you’ll note, yesterday.”

More of that hair-raising energy rolled out of Vlad, until I was rubbing my arms to chase the tingling sensations away. Was this what Marty meant when he told me vampires could measure each others’ strength by feeling their auras? If so, then Vlad’s had Badass: Do Not Engage written all over it.

“I am offering you a real commitment— a place in my life forever. Even if our relationship ended, our tie to each other never would. Let me make you a vampire, Leila, and watch decades slide by like days while you’re by my side.”

“If you introduce yourself to anyone as Mrs. Dracula, I’ll bite you in a manner you won’t enjoy.”

“I despise flowery speech since those who use it are usually guilty of the worst betrayals later. That and the type of life I’ve lived have made me incapable of saying the pretty words you deserve to hear, yet if I made you a vampire, you’d feel my emotions as clearly as I hear your thoughts now.”

Then he drew my hand to his chest, placing it over his heart.

“I never turned any of my previous lovers because I didn’t want them to feel how little I cared. You I loved, yet you left me because I wouldn’t verbalize my emotions. That will probably happen again, but if you could feel what you mean to me, Leila” —his voice deepened— “words wouldn’t matter.”

On Dublin Street by Samantha Young-This is a story that really shocked me. I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. I was expecting

"Complete"

“Complete”

a average enjoyable romance but nothing that would really call out to me. Boy do I love being wrong especially when reading a romance. It turned me upside down and I loved every moment.

“Asshole.” “Just for that, I expect you to wrap that dirty mouth of yours around my cock tonight.” He narrowed his eyes on me.

I couldn’t believe he’d just said that to me in a fancy restaurant where anyone might overhear. “Are you kidding?” “Babe,” he gave me a look that suggested I was missing the obvious, “I never kid about blowjobs.”

Our waiter had descended on us just in time to hear those romantic words and his rosy cheeks betrayed his embarrassment. “Ready to order?” he croaked out.“Yes,” Braden answered, obviously uncaring he’d been overhead. “I’ll have the steak, medium-rare.” He smiled softly at me. “What are you having?” He took a swig of water. He thought he was so cool and funny. “Apparently sausage.” Braden choked on the water, coughing into his fists, his eyes bright with mirth as he put his glass back on the table. “Are you okay, sir?” The waiter asked anxiously. “I’m fine, I’m fine.”

“I miss someone who gets me. I called a woman on my research team a bitch – you know in a friendly way – and she told me to go to hell. And I think she really meant it.”
“Rhian, we’ve talked about this. Normal people don’t like to be called names. For some reason, they tend to take is personally. And you are a tad bitchy, by the way.
“Normal people are so sensitive.”

“I was washing the dishes and the sneaky bastard crept up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. And kissed me. Right here.” I pointed angrily to my neck. “Can I not have him committed or something?”

Dr. Pritchard snorted. “For loving you?”

I drew back, shaking my head in disgust. “Dr. Pritchard,” I admonished softly. “Whose side are you on?”

“Braden’s.”

“You’re afraid. I get it,” he bent to murmur comfortingly in my ear. “I know why you ran today, and I know why you’re running now. But shit happens, babe, there’s no protecting against it. You also can’t let it take over your life and rule your relationships with people. We need to enjoy the time we have, however long it’s going to be. Stop running.”

Tempt Me At Twilight 1Tempt Me At Twilight by Lisa Kleypas–Poppy and Harry. These two are so fabulous and I love the interaction between them. I love the Staff of the hotel. And the Hathaway family fun times of course!! What is most special about these two is how they learn each other and it takes some time.

The chef turned back to the housekeeper. “Why is there doubt about the relations between Monsieur and Madame Rutledge?”

The sheets,” she said succinctly.

Jake nearly choked on his pastry. “You have the housemaids spying on them?” he asked around a mouthful of custard and cream.

Not at all,” the housekeeper said defensively. “It’s only that we have vigilant maids who tell me everything. And even if they didn’t, one hardly needs great powers of observation to see that they do not behave like a married couple.”

The chef looked deeply concerned. “You think there’s a problem with his carrot?”

Watercress, carrot—is everything food to you?” Jake demanded.

The chef shrugged. “Oui.”

Well,” Jake said testily, “there is a string of Rutledge’s past mistresses who would undoubtedly testify there is nothing wrong with his carrot.”

Alors, he is a virile man . . . she is a beautiful woman . . . why are they not making salad together?”

“I don’t want to be a widow, I don’t want Michael Bayning, and I don’t want you to joke about such things, you tactless clodpole!”

As all three of them stared at her open mouthed, Poppy leapt up and stalked away, her hands drawn into fists.

Bewildered by the immediate force of her fury—it was like being stung by a butterfly—Harry stared after her dumbly. After a moment, he asked the first coherent thought that came to him. “Did she just say she doesn’t want Bayning?”

“Yes,” Win said, a smile hovering on her lips. “That’s what she said. Go after her, Harry.”

Every cell in Harry’s body longed to comply. Except that he had the feeling of standing on the edge of a cliff, with one ill-chosen word likely to send him over. He gave Poppy’s sister a desperate glance. “What should I say?”

“Be honest with her about your feelings,” Win suggested.

A frown settled on Harry’s face as he considered that. “What’s my second option?”

“I never want to be apart from you,” he said. “I’m going to buy an island and take you there. A ship will come once a month with supplies. The rest of the time it will be just the two of us, wearing leaves and eating exotic fruit and making love on the beach . . .”

You’d start a produce export business and organize a local economy within a month,” she said flatly.

Harry groaned as he recognized the truth of it. “God. Why do you tolerate me?”

Poppy grinned and slid her arms around his neck. “I like the side benefits,” she told him. “And really, it’s only fair since you tolerate me.”

“You fascinate me in every way,” Harry whispered, his hand playing gently in her hair . “There are mysteries in your soul that will take a lifetime to uncover…and I want to know every one of them.” No one had ever called her mysterious before. While Poppy didn’t think of herself that way, she rather liked it. “I’m not all that mysterious, am I?” “Of course you are.” Smiling, he lifted her hand and pressed a kiss into the tender cup of her palm. “You’re a woman.”

The Secret by Julie Garwood–This is one of my favorite couples. At first, its necessary for them to deal with each other, but it soons turnThe Secret to love. Julie Garwood is one of the best historical romance authors ever!! Her writing is phenomenal and she definitely knew what she was doing when she wrote Ian and Judith’s story. Now there are many moments I loved between these two, but my favorite is the wedding scene. So dang good. Nothing better than those special moments that I remember and still cling to even though I read this book many years ago.

“Can we get on with this?” Father Laggan cried out. “In the name of the Father…”
“I’m inviting my aunt Millicent and uncle Herbert to come for a visit, Iain, and I’m not going through the council to get permission first.”
“… and of the Son,” the priest continued in a much louder voice.
“She’ll be wanting King John next,” Duncan predicted.
“We can’t allow that, lass,” Owen muttered.
“Please join hands now and concentrate on this ceremony,” Father Laggan shouted, trying to gain everyone’s attention.
“I don’t want King John to come here,” Judith argued. She turned to frown at Owen for making such a shameful suggestion. “I want my aunt and uncle. I’m getting them, too.” She turned and had to peek around Graham in order to look up at Iain. “Yes or no, Iain.”
“We’ll see. Graham, I’m marrying Judith, not you. Let go of her hand. Judith, move over here.”
Father Laggan gave up trying to maintain order. He continued on with the ceremony. Iain was paying some attention. He immediately agreed to take Judith for his wife. She wasn’t as cooperative. He felt a little sorry for the sweet woman. She looked thoroughly
confused.
“Judith, do you take Iain for your husband?”
She looked up at Iain before giving her answer. “We’ll see.”
“That won’t do, lass. You’ve got to say I do,” he advised.
“Do I?”
Iain smiled. “Your aunt and uncle will be welcomed here.”
She smiled back.
….
Judith tried not to laugh. She turned her attention back to Father Laggan. “I will say I do,”
she told him. “Shouldn’t we begin now?”
“The lass has trouble following along,” Vincent remarked.
Father Laggan gave the final blessing while Judith argued with the elder about his rude comment. Her concentration was just fine, she told him quite vehemently.
She nagged an apology out of Vincent before giving the priest her attention again. “Patrick, would you go and get Frances Catherine? I would like her to stand by my side during the ceremony.”
“You may kiss the bride,” Father Laggan announced.

“I’ll stay away from you and you’ll stay away from me. I’m already over this insignificant, puny, inconsequential attraction. I don’t even remember kissing you.”
They had reached the cluster of trees in front of the courtyard leading to Frances Catherine’s cottage when she told him that outrageous lie.
“The hell you have forgotten,” he muttered. He grabbed hold of her shoulders and forced her to turn around. Then he took hold of her chin and pushed her face up.
“What do you think you’re doing?” she demanded.
“Reminding you.”

He shrugged. “I was…thinking.”
“About what?”
“The fires of purgatory.”
She had to sit down. He wasn’t making any sense now. “What does that mean?” she asked.
“Patrick told me he would walk through the fires of purgatory if he had to in order to please his wife.”
She went over to the bed and sat down on the side. “And?” she prodded when he didn’t continue.
He stripped out of his clothing and walked over to her. He pulled her to her feet and stared down to her.
“And I have only just realized I would do the same for you.”

Bite Me If you CanBite Me If You Can by Lynsay Sands—Oh yay for Lucian and Leigh. I love the Argeneau series, but these two might be my favorite of them all. Their interactions with each other are so entertaining and lively. I just can’t get enough of these two.

“What is it?”
Leigh glanced up with uncertainty, then back to his groin with a sort of horrified fascination. “Well, um… is there something about immortals you haven’t told me?”
“What? What do you mean?” he asked with bewilderment.
Leigh shook her head, then leaned forward and said “Hello?” to his groin, only to stiffen again and jerk back as if it had hissed at her.
“Are you talking to my penis?” Lucian asked with disbelief.
“It talked to me first,” she said defensively, and frowned. “You didn’t mention this little skill.”
Lucian decided she must be joking and laughed. “So, what did it say?”
“It said, ‘Lucian? Lucian, are you there?’” He blinked.
“Why would it say that?”
“I don’t know. It’s your penis.”
That’s when he recalled the cell phone in his pocket. A laugh bursting from his lips, Lucian reached in his pocket to retrieve the phone.

“I made you something to eat if you’re hungry.”
Leigh peered at the steaming pile on the plate on the tray, then asked uncertainly. “What is it?”
“Prime cuts in gravy.”
“Prime cuts in gravy?” she echoed slowly. “Did you cook it?”
“I opened the can and heated it up in the microwave for one minute. Someone named Alpo cooked it.”
Leigh stiffened, her head shooting up, eyes wide with disbelief. “Alpo?”
He shrugged. “That’s what the can said.”
Leigh shook her head with bewilderment. “You can use a microwave, but not a phone, and don’t know that Alpo isn’t the chef, but the brand name for dog food?” There was something seriously wrong here.

“Can’t you do something for her?” his nephew finally asked, when several moments passed and her screaming and
didn’t stop.
“I already have. I didn’t kill her,” Lucian said dryly, then added, “Slow down. You’re as bad as taxi drivers.”
“And you’re a backseat driver,” Thomas muttered, then cursed under his breath. “Surely there are some drugs or something we could give her to settle her down?”
Lucian glanced at him with interest. “Do you have any?”
Thomas blinked. “No.”
“Hmm.” He sat back in his seat. “Neither do I.”
Thomas stared for a moment, glanced back at the woman in the back of the car, then said, “Her screaming is rather loud, don’t you think? Just a bit distracting for those of us trying to concentrate.”
“Yes, it is,” Lucian agreed, and reached into his pocket for his earplugs. He popped them into his ears and closed his eyes, the shrieking in the car considerably muffled. He’d have killed the woman before the plane had landed without the earplugs. They were a blessing.

I need to read Lorraine’s TX book. I think I would love that one 🙂 There are so many books that I would read again and again and again just for that one moment in the story that I am like there you are “you little passage that just hooked me in big time” 🙂

You know I agree that Julie Garwood is one of the best historical romance writers ever. And I just love the wedding scene from The Secret. I haven’t read On Dublin Street. I really didn’t care for her Hero book, so I’ve been hesitant. But I’ve also heard that it so good.

Yes, I have several books like that where they get to that moment and I can’t even breathe b/c I’m so into it. The humor adds balance especially if the characters or plot are so intense. There are so many times in the Outlander series where I’ve felt like that. I love the Mercy Thompson series particularly that moment near the end of book three when Adam finally stakes his claim.
