Burning Skies is the second book in the Guardian’s of Ascension series and boy this book packs a punch. I read the first book “Ascension” a handful of years ago and LOVED it and I am not sure why I never continued with the series but now I have. And now I know why I adored book one so much and how easily I fell in love with these winged vampire guardians and the humor and wit that is placed in these stories is simply phenomenal. I have to say I am loving the world-building and it’s even better in book two than from what I remember in book one. And honestly, I wasn’t that lost considering its been a few years since I was in this world. So you definitely can read these as stand a lones, although you would probably get more out of these books if you read them in order, but it’s not a HAVE TO—more out of your own personal preference.
In this book we get our main couple which is Marcus and Havily. Marcus left his warriors and his duty to fight in the war when his sister and children were killed and went down to the mortal earth realm and built a thriving capitalist empire. But now the leader of their kind wants him back no matter the cost even if she has to do some manipulation along the way. Havily is learning her way and her abilities are growing including being able to share dreams with Marcus. Marcus and Havily have a strong bond, a fated bond if only they will embrace it. But as the danger to them escalates, so does their passion for each other. But will they be able to embrace the bond or will it be rejected?
Burning Skies is such an incredible journey into this world of battle warriors and a dangerous enemy who is amassing his own power and people to fight for him. There is so much detail to this world-building that our delightful author Caris Roane has created for her readers. There is also not just the main story, but another story that leads up to book three where we are introduced to Parisma and Medichi. I was so delighted to see them in this story and see their story begin which only made me eager to pick up book three even faster. I really loved these winged angel vampires that this author has created in this world and there is quite a bit of intrigue, magical mystery and self-discovery that was so addicted to this reader. I honestly couldn’t get enough of this book and never wanted it to end.
The romance that builds between Marcus and Havily is a bit different though. Havily has no will to actually embrace the mating bond with Marcus. At first, she views him as a coward for abandoning his people in their hour of need but it does take a while for Marcus to give her the full truth. Marcus is hiding from the pain and torment of losing his sister and blames Kerrick (hero of the first book Ascension) who was his brother in law. There is quite a bit of character growth that we see arise in Marcus. Not just learning his way with Havily but also discovering who he is meant to be and to embrace the path he is headed towards which is one I NEVER saw coming but boy this author does like to leave some surprises at the end. From beginning to end this story mystifies and magnifies the reader in such a harmonious and captivating manner that will delight you in ways you never imagined. I am thrilled to see what she has in store for me next on this journey of the Guardians of Ascension!! THRILLING TO THE CORE IN EVERY WAY!
