'Resonance' is supposed to be a dream - that's when your soulmate is chosen for you. And everyone on the ice planet has hooked up with a big, hunky soulmate of their own... except me. So do I want a mate? Heck yeah. More than anything, all I've ever wanted is to be loved by someone.

Except that the soulmate chosen for me? My least favorite person on the darn ice planet. Haeden's the most cranky, disapproving, unpleasant, overbearing male alien... so why is it that my body sings when he gets close? Why is he working so hard to prove to me that he's not as awful as I think he is?

I hate him... don't I?

Barbarian’s Mate is the sixth book in the series, and I was able to grab this on audio through Audible and I just breezed through this book. It might not be my favorite book of the series, but it had some fun times and we get a little bit more of the world that Ruby Dixon has created for us here.I first want to mention that if you haven’t read this series…then go grab them up. They are all available on Kindle Unlimited (if you have it) but these books are only a few dollars and well worth the price. Ruby Dixon has made aliens sexy and they are blue, horned and have tails…but they SO WORK FOR ME and each book is simply fabulous.

The story sets off pretty much from where book five ends. Our heroine, Josie, is the last one to be mated. The ship with all the medical technology, is broken and so she doesn’t know how she will get her IUD out of her because she is pretty sure that is why her cootiehas been so silent.  But when they return to the southern caves, her IUD drops on the floor and now Josie is like “smart smart cootie”. Josie is more than ready to have a mate and have babies. More than any of the women that crash landed, she wants it more than anything. And now she is free, and so she goes to all the single males, hoping her cootie will hum soon and it does but to the last alien on earth she wants to be mated to…her nemesis Haeden. Haeden is just as shocked as Josie is that Josie is his mate. He never thought he would be able to have another mate. But is hurt too, because now he has a mate that hates him too. He craves to be accepted and loved just as Josie does. Josie refuses to accept the mating. And so for over a month they resist what their cooties are pushing them to do. Josie wants to get their cooties removed because she doesn’t want to be with someone that hates her, or raise children in a hateful home. So when Haeden sees Josie wasting away because of her resisting the mating bond he takes her to the medical ship to get them removed. But when they learn the machines aren’t working, Josie realizes that she will need to make the best of it and try to be civil with Haeden. But then another misunderstanding occurs and she leaves the caves and goes in search of Harlowe’s Cave by the sea. But she stumbles across a deserted ship and finds two pods with women in it, and when she goes for help, she finds that Haeden has come for her and is battling with Metlaks (monkey like creatures) and she goes out to save him and ends up injured. And as Haeden helps heal her hands, they begin to be open and honest with each other and find out that their mating wouldn’t be so bad and once they learn each other’s past and feelings, they begin to truly connect emotionally and give into the desire they feel for each other.

This is Haeden and Josie’s book. Now in the previous books, we have seen the chemistry and the angst between them building with each book. They really really don’t like each other….and we learn the background of the reasons behind what they do. I really looked forward to this one because of Josie because she is so funny and sweet and cheerful….she is a ray of sunshine but in this book we didn’t get much of that aspect unfortunately. I hardly saw the Josie in this book that we see in previous books so that was a big disappointment. And honestly….TALK TO EACH OTHER already, and even though its only the first half of the story, these two drove me nuts. I really liked the hero way more than the heroine. Because he doesn’t hate Josie, he just doesn’t understand the risks that she takes.

I touch her cheek before she can push my hand away. I am filled with longing, an aching need that will never be fulfilled. She will never be my mate. She will never let me claim her. She will never accept me into her arms and let me fill her belly with our child. Those things will not be mine

Josie was a character I had a hard time truly understanding at times. I mean really…she was so difficult at times. Josie has a difficult past. She was abused sexually since she was a child, and was raised in foster homes until she was an adult. And then on the alien ship she was raped. But she doesn’t want to focus on the past, she prefer to focus on the future. She wants to have a family and to be truly accepted and loved because she has never had it before. But I found her to be very selfish in this book, and she really hurts Haeden in the first half wanting their “cooties” removed.

Haeden had a mate once, but he was young and naive at the time, and his mate didn’t want him and would take her pleasure with another male. And Haeden waited hoping she would change his mind, being sick and miserable. But then the cootie sickness killed her and he was the only survivor of the camp. And then he finds Josie, who also doesn’t want him and hates him too. But he never gives up on their mating and hoping for more from Josie. He is so protective and caring with Josie, and very patient more than she deserves in my mind.

Just once, I wish she would look back. I wish she would see me, waiting on the horizon for her. Waiting to take care of her. To comfort her. To be her man and her mate and whatever else she needs

Once Haeden and Josie become fully honest with each other, and get past the miscommuncation its where the book takes a new turn that I just delighted in and I couldn’t get enough of!! I just got hooked on these two and seeing this new level of intimacy that develops between them. They have some great hot sex of course, but they also have so many emotionally moving moments that you just fall in love with them pretty quickly. I love how devoted Haeden is towards Josie and how much he acts out his love for her more than just saying the words and I ADORED his shows of affection and caring. But Josie has some redeemable moments, and once she learns from her mistakes, she grows from it and you learn to really like her character and boy she kicks ass at times too.

Overall I found Barbarian’s Mate to be a delicious read and a book I just had to gobble up and I didn’t want to put down AT ALL!! It was simply fantastic once you get past the halfway mark, and Ruby Dixon has delivered another light and fun and sexy read with blue aliens to soak up like a sponge. I can’t wait for the next one!!

You are my life, my heart, my everything
