It’s hard being the most popular girl on the ice planet. The alien men are falling all over themselves to impress me in the hopes that I’ll take them to my furs. But they don’t know my secrets – none of them do. And they don’t realize that behind my smile, I just wish they’d go away.

I don’t want any of them. I want someone else – someone with a gorgeous blue body, big horns, and the most intense gaze ever. He’s the only one that knows the truth. Maybe with him, I can work through my fears of the past…. but I’m pretty sure he wants more than just friendship.

He wants forever, and I’m not sure I can give it.

Barbarian’s Prize is the fifth book in the Ice Planet Barbarian’s series by Ruby Dixon. I have had such a blast reading these books and Dixon has done such a superb job in the world building and all the mineute details that only build with each book.

Now for those who are new to this series, and don’t know about these sexy blue barbarian aliens. Our series began when human women were kidnapped by aliens from earth, and they crash landed on a ice planet. They could only survive by having a Khui inserted into them which “resonates” when it finds its mate. They are brought and accepted into this barbarian like culture, where women are scarce and rare. The men go out to hunt and the women take care of the home in the caves. Its winter all year round. And they have been on the planet for over a year and half currently.

In this story, our pair of the book is Salukh and Tiffany. Now Tiffany is one of the last two women to not have a mate yet and Tiffany is more than happy about that fact. She so doesn’t want to have a mate. Tiffany suffers from trauma, while on the alien ship  that brought them to the ice planet, she was raped and now goes into panic mode anytime a man touches her even casually. And she fears of finding a “mate” and being forced upon again. Tiffany is more than content to keep up with the many chores, and finding a way to grow her crops. She doesn’t like the attention that she is getting from the males around her in the southern caves. So she and her friend Josie come up with a plan to keep them occupied with a tournament of sorts to “win her affections”.

There is our mate, I tell it. See how lovely she is? How fragile? I need to resonate for her. I need to claim her, to protect her.
Tee-fah-nee is mine.
Resonate.
Resonate.
Resonate so I may claim her.
But my khui is silent, the traitor, as I walk up to her.

But while the men are distracted, something new forms in Tiffany, a friendship with one of the aliens…the only one she isn’t afraid of. Salukh knows that Tiffany is his mate, and even though his Khui isn’t vibrating yet, he knows in his heart that he loves her and that she is his, he just has to prove to her of his devotion. He is full of confidence and respect for Tiffany.  But he wants her to see him and his desire for her. When he learns the truth about her past, and why she is so skittish, he begins to understand. And when she suggests that he helps her by touching each other, he is more than willing. But as they get caught up in the passion they feel for each other, things go topsy turvy when they are caught by the other blue barbarians and Salukh will have to prove himself of his love and devotion to Tiffany.

This was such a well written story and probably one of my favorites of the series so far!! I know I know…that is really hard to decide, because I have read some whoppers so far, but this story just sung to me in different ways. First off, you feel the trauma and the emotional turmoil that Tiffany goes through. From her nightmares to her panic attacks, you just ache for her. She can’t seem to get over the past like Josie. She never seems to be able to move on from what was done to her. We see the inner workings of her mind, and I really admired Tiffany. She is dedicated, hard working and passionate. I love how driven she is to make this “ice planet” her home and learn everything she can. But she is not perfect, and leads some of the males on in thinking she desired them when she just wanted an escape. So you understand her reasons for the “tournament” and everything but you also see that it could have been done different. But Tiffany is working through the after effects of the rape on the ship, and trying to be so strong. Tiffany has to come to the realization that she is holding back the mating. That the khui won’t resonate until she resolves her fear and learns to be compltely open to this new life and not hold herself back. I loved seeing her journey and seeing her overcome her fears.

You must accept that there will be things in life that are not good, but they are outweighed by the good things. If there were no bad, we would not appreciate the wonders that life has to offer. There will be fear, but you must not let it win

Then we have our darling hero….Salukh. He is so so devoted to Tiffany, so patient and understanding and doesn’t want to scare her. He knows that they are mates, even though his Khui is so silent, he has no doubt in his mind or heart that they are meant to be together. But even before he learns of her rape, he knows that there is something dark in her past that is haunting her and doesn’t want to scare her like the others. So he becomes her friend first, learning her ways and trying to be her support when she needs it. He is so steady and sure and reliable. I honestly think he might be my favorite hero so far. I love how careful he is of Tiffany, and doesn’t push anything that she isn’t ready for even when she hurts him unintentionally due to her fears. Even though he is a powerful hunter in the tribe, I would think he is more a beta hero. And boy….we need more of them in romance and Ruby Dixon wrote his character so well.

Now I did want to talk about the sexy times in this book and oh man they were so delicious and tender and sensual. I love how open they are with each other, playful and trying new things. They are pretty vital to their relationship, and there aren’t many full smexy time scenes, so I recommend reading them because it’s these scenes that they really connect. I have to say the horn scene was my favorite…*sigh* this hero knows how to love his women so deliciously. The romance that develops between this pairing that goes from friends to lover is so sweet, poignant and gets your motors running. It’s a sensual and romantic read that is guaranteed to have you falling in love with Salukh and Tiffany’s journey to each other….A HEARTFELT ALIEN LOVE TALE!!
