The Highlander's Woman by Monica BurnsSeries: The Reckless Rockwoods #3
Published by Maroli SP Imprints on September 1st 2015
Genres: Historical Romance, Scottish Highlands
Format: eARC
Source: Netgalley
WARNING: Book contains a proud Highlander unwilling to surrender his heart a second time, and a half-Scottish heroine who, like most Rockwoods, is up to the challenge of making her man realize she's The Highlander's Woman.
Julian MacTavish’s honor made him guard a friend’s secret. But his lies to keep that vow make it difficult to prove his faithfulness as a husband. When a terrible inferno scars Patience’s body and mind, she becomes a recluse, widening the divide between them. But it’s her lack of trust, not her disfigurement, which sends Julian home alone to Scotland convinced he’s lost her forever.
Forgiveness in the face of death comes easily to Patience MacTavish, but the thought of being a burden to her husband does not. When a twist of fate takes Julian’s sight from him, Patience returns home hoping to make amends for not having faith in him. Pity is the last thing Julian wants from anyone, especially his wife, and it’s his turn to question her sincerity. Now, Patience must convince her husband that she’s come home for no other reason than love, even if it means arranging a highlander’s seduction.
Summary
Julian MacTavish, is in love with his wife, and is completely loyal to her. Even though his family, most especially his father didn’t approve, he knew that she was the one for him. But when he makes a promise to a childhood friend, his word is his honor. But keeping his word means keeping some secrets of his wife. Patience adores her husband, but she struggles with jealousy and when there are certain signs of him keeping secrets from her, and spending time with a woman that obviously wants Julian. Patience doesn’t know if she can trust Julian, even if she wants to. But on one fateful night, in trying to save her nieces and nephews, Patience loses her two brothers in a fire, and she ended up severely burned on one side of her body. Patience blames herself for her brothers’ deaths, both of whom left behind children. Patience ended up scarred from her burns, and in her mind not worthy of Julian. Now its been almost a year, and she learns that he is blind from a carriage accident and it snaps her out of her own self-doubt and pity, and she sees how much she has damaged their relationship, and she will have to fight to win her husband over…because he will fight her every step of the way. Will Patience be able to prove to Julian of her love for him or will she lose him forever?
Plot and Story Line
The Highlander’s Woman was a highly emotional story that just won me over from the beginning. It begins with Julian and Patience being newly married. Normally in most stories, we don’t see this circumstance…usually that is the ending. So it was quite fun to see them starting at the beginning of their marriage and see how vital trust is needed in a relationship. Monica Burns is such a wonderful author, and I love how emotional her books are. The heat level she implements are usually higher than the mainstream historical romance, but its equally balanced well with emotion. This is the type of story that will have you spellbound and flipping through those pages as fast as possible. I read this in just a couple of hours, so that should tell you how much I loved it. It is very intense and has some moments that were pretty vividly pictured, and I needed a box of tissues to get through this one because it deals with some traumatizing events. This couple is really tested in this story. They both learn how love doesn’t matter unless you have complete trust.
“I love you, Julian. I’m yours heart, body and soul.”
This was a story that is one of those full belly satisfying reads, that even though it puts the reader through the ringer. I would highly recommend this book, and even though its the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone, but I so want to read the first two books now. If you have yet to try this author out, I would highly recommend her. I love the way she weaves her stories that are both sensual and poignantly romantic.
The Cover
This is a unique cover, I love the scene with the Scottish background and the gray clouds, it has a softer feel to it.
Overall View
The Highlander’s Woman is a fast paced and intense story that is vivid in emotion, plenty of heat and passion, a mix of magic and mystery; and seeing the power of healing in the face of trauma. A SPICY ROMANCE!!

Ooooh, it looks good ! I’d like to comment on the heroin’s dress but… there’s not much left of it 😉 You’re right, beginning a novel with a newly married couple is very rare. Adding it to my list, thanks for sharing !
Thank you for this review. I have this on pre-order.
Reading your summary definitely warns me that this one will get me emotional. Some books should be rated by how many tissues are needed.
Who doesn’t enjoy a good highlander romance? This definitely sounds like exactly my cup of tea! Thanks for the great review 🙂
You know I love HRs set in Scotland. This one seems really interesting. A different sort of romance, but just as satisfying.
