Tea & Biscuits Book Discussions: Reading Habits

Every one who reads has different reading habits, and its always fun to look at what we do while we are reading. I have noticed that over time my actual reading habits haven’t really changed all that much. They have remained constant over the past ten years or so. So what are my reading habits?

Most time when I just grab a book and read I usually settle in my bedroom. Its nice and quiet and its my space, which I have decorated. It’s warm and cozy and I love it. It makes me eager to have my own place soon and be able to decorate and furnish in my own style. I could read out in the living room or the kitchen, but I have three roommates that are constantly coming and going and it can get distracting. So I tend to stay in my room for my reading. Now I usually love to read on my stomach cuddling with a pillow. I always like listening to music. And for many years I have had to. When you live in college housing, most college students aren’t considerate or care about how noisy they can be. So I have had to play music while reading. But this year, I totally lucked out with my roomates. They are so quiet, so lately I don’t listen to music as much. Its wonderful to read a book with no noise….so peaceful and it took a little while to get used to the quiet. But normally when I do play music (which I know this sounds weird, but I love listening to instrumental and soundtrack music when reading historical’s) Crazy I know….but I love the music I have for my reading music because its relaxing and really sets the perfect tone for reading in a historical time frame.

I love eating and reading!! I don’t drink hardly ever. I have a pretty healthy diet now (attempting to get slim and toned) and drinking a lot of alcohol isn’t conducive to living healthy. I would rather save those calories for a sweet or when I am going out with friends or on a date. So I drink on special occasions. But I do love a good cup of herbal tea while reading. Tea is one of my favorite things, and its zero calories so I can drink as much as I want and not gain…well…ANYTHING LOL. Plus I love how refreshed it makes me feel. I love reading at night and during the day. Although with my crazy weird schedule because of the work I do, I don’t sleep at night. So I have been reading more during the night and mornings. Most times if I am reading a paperback, I try not to eat but if I do I make sure its not messy. I usually will use my e-reader if I want to read while eating. My biggest reason is because I can set it up at an angle, and set it a bit away so that I don’t risk spilling anything on it.

Lately, I have been focusing on more paperbacks and audio books. The only time I have really read e-books is for ARC’s. I am trying to get back to read on printed paper. I love the experience of it. So that is the biggest change for me lately.

I love reading in my bed. I live alone, so I don’t really have to worry about roommate noise, but there really isn’t anything better than snuggling in bed with a good book. While I do read during the week, I especially love when I can read for hours and hours on my days off. Especially Sundays. I can’t listen to music and read at the same time. It’s too distracting. However, were I to listen to music while reading it would definitely be instrumentals. I really like instrumentals.

So jealous you live alone. Hopefully I will next year. I agree about reading on my days off. My weekends are where I catch up on my reading since during the week is harder for me. I love instrumentals and some soundtrack scores like pride and prejudice.

Before I left home for college, I mostly read in my room or in the car. My friends didn’t read and I was pretty active in sports. At college, I didn’t read much at all beyond what was needed for classes and not just b/c of the loud roommates which I had in abundance. I just didn’t have the time between work and classes, sports, and music. As an adult on my own and then, later, married, I started reading at night and in bed. In the last five years, I’ve finally had the time to read more than a few chapters at night. I read in my favorite chair inside or out on the screened in porch in my other favorite chair. I’ll eat a/o drink a beverage while reading, but I tend to get snacky and not pay attention to intake so I now put together a proper serving size in a dish and not a ‘bag’ or container of something. I prefer it quiet when I read. Music is actually very distracting even if its classic instrumental b/c I love music and my attention becomes divided between the two. That said, I have great powers of concentration and can ignore people around me or the TV being on when I get into my stories. 😉

Love learning about your life reading habits!! I love reading outside, but don’t get to do it much. Since we have blistering hot summers, and bitter winters. Right now its perfect, so on the weekends I will go outside in the morning and read. Thanks for sharing your habits, its always fun to see the different ways that we each like to read and the environment we surround ourselves in.

i dont know if i have any habits, mine are usually just where ever my son happens to fall asleep. I always did like reading in bed, so thats one thing that didn’t change, but it means reading at night so therefore not much sleep for this mama

Well you read when you can and when its peaceful and quiet and after the kids go to bed!! Reading is so fun in bed but I try to switch it up if I can. I do love reading outside though under the shade of a tree on a quiet morning.

I usually grab a small snack, get under the blanket (either on my couch or in bed – no snack in that case) and read. I leave a music channel on TV in the background and my cat is usually snuggled up by my side. Or across the book if he’s jealous and wants attention. lol

I have to have music or TV on while I read; if it’s too quiet, I can’t focus. I nibble while I read and always have a glass of something to drink. And I usually have a cat on or next to me. 😀

I also talked about reading habits at my blog, http://beasbooknook.blogspot.com/2015/09/bea-talks-reading-habits.html

I pretty much read anywhere. Noise doesn’t bother me for some reason. I usually site with my family and read while they watch TV.

I tend to read late at night, when all the kids are sleeping. I don’t have to worry about being interrupted at all. Sometimes I eat while I read, but since I read mainly paperbacks I try not to eat anything that can be messy. I am ashamed to say I am like a kid still learning to eat when I do eat. Somehow food just gets everywhere.
