Tea And Biscuits Book Discussion–What Genres Make Us

Tea & BiscuitsBook Discussion

Welcome to a new feature here on ADDICTED TO ROMANCE. Every Monday I will be hosting a book discussion with a variety of topics and issues. This feature will be a way for us to discuss together these topics and share opinions. So please and join in.

Today we will be discussing Genres and how they impact our choices for reading and what genre is for us individually. Each of us have different personalities and interests that separates us from each other. So when it comes to reading and books, there are going to be certain genres that make us in different ways. Of course when we read romance there is a web of genres out there for us to choose. Some of us just prefer one genre to stick to, others like a couple of different ones, or there are those select few that prefer a full spectruc of genres to pick. Many of you know that the only books I really read for fun and pleasure are romance novels!! I am practically addicted to them. But when it comes to genres…its a whole different ball game.

So what genres are out there–well let me list the main ones:

  • Contemporary Romance
  • Historical Romance
  • Paranormal Romance
  • Fantasy Romance
  • Science Fiction Romance
  • Urban Fantasy Romance

Now in each of these genres we have “sub genre”, and depending on the main genre you are reading, will determine if you have one or two sub genres or many. Let me List a few examples of sub genres so you can understand what I mean

Billionaires–Sub Genre of Contemporary

Regency–Sub Genre of Historical

Shape Shifting–Sub Genre of Paranormal

There are many others that I could list but I wanted to give you a general idea.

I first want to start with my own personal choices for genres and why they are so vital in how we choose a book to read and what makes it tick for us. When I first started reading romances, there wasn’t much in general genres…there were only a couple. Now keep in mind this was fifteen years ago, and so much has evolved and changed since then, and the romance fiction has developed much more than I could have ever imagined when I sixteen and got hooked on them. When I was sixteen, if I were to go to the library or to the bookstore such as Barnes & Noble, there wasn’t much in variety of genre. Back then there was mostly Historical Romance and some Contemporary like Danielle Steele and Nora Roberts. But Contemporary Romance wasn’t super popular…what was most popular was Historical Romance with authors such as Kathleen Woodiwiss, Johanna Lindsey and Lisa Kleypas. For quite a few years I read mostly Historical Romance and then we started to see Paranormal Romance more and more, and then Urban and Regular Fantasy Romance came to be. Its been a ride these years seeing all these new varieties. So what do I prefer now? It depends on my mood to be honest. But also I love to read a variety of genres…I like to enjoy a mixture of fun aspects that enter into a solid romance novel. From Pirates and Highlanders and Cowboys to Vampires and sexy shape shifters, to those hockey players and those billionaires, from witches and aliens…and many more!! If I had to choose a genre to read it would be historical romance, mostly because of the variety that can be found in historical romance. There are many other reasons, one is I have a fascination with history, and a mix of history, romance and a happy ending is the perfect mixture for a true love story! I love seeing a couple for to stay together and have a future and its such fun to see history come alive especially when the details seem so real. But in reality I will read anything that has a love story with a happy ending–no matter the setting.

Questions For The Readers

  • If you were on a deserted island and could only choose one genre of romance to read…what would it be and why?

  • What makes a genre tick for you?

  • Are you single genre, a couple genres or the full spectrum?

I start to panic at just the thought of figuring out what would make my ‘desert island’ packing. Haha! I would grab a Diana Gabaldon, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, Patricia Briggs, Kristen Ashley, Joanna Wylde, JRR Tolkien, Lexi Anders, and Lara Adrian.

I am one who pretty much likes most genres (horror, not so much). I read all sub-genres of romance, but also general fiction, mysteries, history, and some non-fiction on topics of interest.

Love the new discussion post, Renee!

haha I know…it would be so hard to pick!! For me personally it would be Johanna Linsey, Lisa Kleypas, Kerrelyn Sparks, Julie Garwood, Clive Cussler and Jennifer Ashley. I agree I can’t do horror at all, whether it’s movies or books. But I mostly just read romance…on occasion I get in the mood for a Clive Cussler read.

I always try to pick a genre based on my mood, and I really enjoy it if there is a little bit of romance going on, even in a thriller or a mystery. I read pretty much all genres, though, and usually manage to pick something I’ll enjoy, too. That’s a good thing with being a seasoned reader. I have many authors whose books I’ll buy without even reading the blurb… their writing is just that good!
Great topic, Renee! I’ll be checking back other Mondays, too πŸ™‚

its nice having read romance for a long time, because I always have a variety of books for whatever mood I may be in. And yes there are those authors I will automatically buy their books…I rarely even look at the price or what it is even about haha I have it bad for those select authors.

Yeah, having it bad for some authors is both a blessing and a curse… because books keep piling up everywhere!

I read pretty much everything in waves. My general is all romance (all subgenres) but I do others as well. Mystery and UF are two I’m slowly getting back into. I went through a huge crime phase and non-fiction but not too often anymore.

If I had to pick one genre I’d probably go with erotic romance since that can be all sorts of things πŸ™‚ Ha! I’m kind of cheating on that but still πŸ™‚

I love all sub genres as well…its good to have a mix to read. I am starting to read more UF slowly but surely. Love your comment on erotic romance, LOL, there is quite a variety that is for sure!! They probably have just about everything.

This is such a fun discussion. I’ll read almost any genre of romance. But my favorites are historical (particularly regency) and contemporary. When I first got into romance I read tons of contemporary and Romantic suspense, too, because I was coming from the mystery genre. I don’t tend to pick up new historical romance authors that often, but my favorite historicals are MY FAVORITE romances, if that makes sense.

Yes I agree about the favorites. The majority of my favorites are mostly historical..some paranormal and a couple contemporary but most of them Historical. Romantic Suspense is so fun to read. I do tend to try out new authors, but I look at their ratings first, but its refreshing to try something new and different.

Hmm, it would be a toss up between romantic suspense and historical on that island. I love all genres, and almost all romance genres. When books grab my attention and allow me to slip away I tend to pick up more in that genre..but it changes weekly, monthly etc. Full spectrum reader for sure πŸ™‚

It would be a tough choice…because those are both fantastic genres!! It is fun reading the full variety of genres though, you get a little bit of everything.

For the island. probably romantic suspense since that combines two of my favorite genres. I grew up on historical romance but these days I rarely read it. I like contemporary and romantic suspense. I do read the occasional historical romantic suspense. πŸ™‚

I love historical romance but I just don’t read it as much as I would like. I need to focus more on Romantic Suspense since I don’t read that genre too often.

Ever since I got into adult romance, I was never able to really get into YA, but maybe one day I will get back into it. I really love historical and paranormal romance the most. Although I am starting to get more hooked on Contemporary Romance!!

    1. Definitely historical romance! My first and main love when it comes to romance novels.

    2. I love it when a genre teaches me something and transports me to a different world/time.

    3. I’m a pretty full spectrum reader. I read almost anything in romance though I do admit I don’t read much romantic suspense nowadays.

I love this feature idea! I look forward to discussing things with you every Monday!
