Elite Let Downs of 2017

by | Dec 30, 2017 | End of Year Survey | 8 comments

I would like to say that every book I read this past year was simply amazing but I would be lying!!! Unfortunately I did have to DNF a few books and low rate some others which was so sad because I so didn’t want to have to be disappointed in reading.

I would have loved to have this book be amazing like I expected but it was a bit of a disappoointing read unfortunately. Especially in how the hero treats the heroine. Of course he has money and is really successful and suffering from a bout of amnesia but he is a jerk in this book and it really puts down the story in ways I didn’t care for too much. Now granted there were some redeemable moments but it was not what I was expecting since I have loved reading this author in the past.

I have loved this author so much in the past, but I just couldn’t get into this one, I just couldn’t feel the connection for this story and I felt a bit bored which is a novelty when it comes to her work.

I know I know, I am probably the only person on the planet right now that didn’t care for this book but its true. I just could get truly invested in the story until the end, I felt like I was forcing myself to read it and the only reason I didn’t put it down earlier was because pretty much all of my blogging friends RAVED about this book so I just knew I had to give it a shot and I did and was so disappointed. It just didn’t click with me, it was probably just me but the story just dragged way too much for me to really enjoy it.

I had grabbed this book as a audiobook, now I am not sure if it was because it was a audiobook and the narrator just didn’t work for me or what, but I just couldn’t find myself interested in this book and I SO wanted to be into this but felt so “bleh” about it. I do plan on picking it up in printed or ebook format one of these days because I would hate to have to give up on this book completely.

This was an ARC and yeah normally I force myself to just get through these books if I receive it through a publisher or author, but this book was so CONFUSING!! I have read this author quite a few times and enjoyed her work. However, this book just gave me a headache and put it down and had to DNF it. Which was really difficult especially when I wanted to enjoy it but just didn’t.

I loved the first book and had no issues with it. However I really was disappointed in this one. My big problem with this book was that it felt like a contemporary romance and it drives me crazy. I don’t care too much for modern heroines in a historical romance—I mean I am reading a HISTORICAL….so I want a historical type heroine. Just some of the phrases the heroine would say is so 21st century and just ruined my true enjoyment of the story as a whole. Even though there were other redeeming factors, this really made me want to throw the book against the wall.

I enjoyed some of Alice Clayton’s books. Sorry this didn’t work for you.

Yes I have enjoyed some of her other books as well, I am hoping it was just the narrator’s fault since I plan on trying it out again. I LOVED Nuts and Wallbanger.

Well, you have a pretty small list here compared to all the books you have read, so thats pretty good!!! I haven’t read or attempted any of these but there will always be books that just don’t work!

Can’t say that I blame you whether it is an unlikable character, wrong mood-wrong time, boring, or confusing- all good reasons to just move right along to the next book.

I confess that I do feel off balance when I can’t seem to get into a book that many readers I trust loved so much, but it happens. LOL

There are always going to be books that just don’t work for one reason or another. I totally understand the narrator not working. Sometimes, I will start an audio and about a half hour realize I am not feeling it so I move on to something else. Often when I try again, I am fine. It’s weird.

Aw, bummer. Hopefully reading Cream of the Crop will be different for you than audio. The Duke was also one of my biggest let downs. I felt lost the whole way through and that’s unusual…I’m typically captivated by her work. The other one I can think of was Danielle Steel’s Fairytale. Haven’t read her in years and this evidently was not the book to use to be reintroduced to her work. LOL!

I struggled with Cream of the Crop too, and DNFed it! I might try it again, but I wasn’t sure if maybe it just wasn’t for me. I did love Act Like It, though. Sorry that one didn’t work for you. We all have our own tastes. There is a super popular romance that everyone loves and I actually kind of dislike it. So I know how that feels.

Oh man, what a bummer to see two books that I enjoyed last year on your let downs list. I didn’t catch the modern phrases in the Lenora Bell book so I’ll have to re-read that one and I totally understand why some people weren’t big fans of the Lucy Parker. Still, thanks for sharing!
