In bestselling author T L Swan’s second hot installment to the Miles High Club series, he’s sexy, rich, and her mortal enemy. Hate never felt so good.
I first met Tristan Miles at a meeting where he was trying to take over my late husband’s company.
He was powerful, arrogant, and infuriatingly gorgeous, and I hated him with every cell in my body. In the shock of the century, he called me three days later and asked me on a date.
I would rather die than date a man like him—though I do have to admit it was good for the ego. Turning him down was the highlight of my year.
Six months later, he was the guest speaker at a conference I attended in France.
Still arrogant and infuriating—but this time, surprisingly charming and witty.
When he looked at me, I got butterflies.
But I can’t go there.
He’s just a player in a hot suit, and I’m just a widow with three unruly sons.
I just need this conference to be over.
Because everybody knows that Tristan Miles always gets what he wants…and what he wants is me.

This review may contain spoilers, so fair warning, upon reading the review.

The Takeover is the second book in the “The Miles High Club” series and I have to be honest, I had super high expectations of this one. So many readers I know have raved and gushed about this one and how much better it was than even The Stopover, so I was expecting it to completely blow me out of the water. And alas, I have to admit that it didn’t, in fact, I am a bit disappointed in this one here. I really expected this one to deliver so much more for me than it actually did. I know I MUST be in the minority where these books are concerned and honestly it boiled it all down to one factor (which I will get to below) now I am not saying that I didn’t enjoy it, because I did, but it felt a bit more lackluster than what I was expecting to find in this one here. I definitely think I had too high of expectations for this one here. So that couldn’t have been an attributing factor.

The Takeover is a sexy mature romance that delivers in some beautiful ways that feature:

  • Tristan Miles– Alpha male, charismatic, protective of family, determined and strong
  • Claire Anderson-Widow and single mother of three boys, head of her husbands company, strong willed, protective mama bear of her boys and driven to pave the way for them.

The Takeover is a story that sets off with the heroine, who is struggling to keep her company above water. She is determined to make sure it’s thriving by the time her sons are of age to take over and run things. She wants to preserve her late husband’s memory the best that she can. But when Tristan Miles makes an offer on her company, she only sees him as the enemy and as a cocky arrogant man and she will do anything to keep that from happening. Claire never imagined that six months later, when she was attending a seminar that the keynote speaker would be none other than Tristan Miles, and the battle of wills is drawn. But through this week of the seminar somehow Claire sees a side of Tristan that she never expected to. Even though there is an intimacy that builds between Claire and Tristan that week, Claire knows there is no future for them. Her life is chaotic in the best of times, and she knows that Tristan deserves more than what she can give him. But Tristan is determined to show Claire how sincere he is, but never expected winning her heart would also have her sons captivating his in return, but can these two opposites find their way towards their HEA?

The Takeover is a sexy romance that definitely had such promise and delightful moments that I couldn’t get enough. I will say that Tristan is my book boyfriend, I truly adored his character in so many ways. After seeing his character in the first book, I was even more excited to begin this one here. But I never imagined that I would struggle with the heroine so much. And yes she is the primary reason for the rating on this one. I struggled so much with Claire, I can’t even tell you. I really am not a fan of these “prickly” heroine types and at first, I was hoping she would mellow out, but to be honest, she doesn’t, and especially the last 15% of the book, well, let’s just say I wanted to chuck my kindle against the wall (and I rarely feel that way) but in this one I did. She drove me bananas, I understand in some ways why she was so defensive, but I couldn’t understand why she kept pushing Tristan away and being so defensive and she could be a witch and it was really a struggle to get behind her as the heroine. Because this was fairly consistent all the way through the book. Tristan just didn’t deserve her callousness towards him and she did have some toxic traits that I just couldn’t condone. Now as for the hero…..*sigh* I dearly loved him. What is so incredible about his character was seeing how he builds such relationships with her sons. Now let me say this gently, her sons are brats haha they truly need a strong male figure in their lives and even though for some of them it happens gradually, they respond so well to Tristan. And the bond that forms between Tristan and her three boys was so endearing in many formats.

I do think all the high reviews of this one might have thrown me off on this one because I was expecting something so different than what I got. I will say that everyone is correct about Tristan Miles, he is one of the best heroes I have read in a while, however, the heroine practically ruined the books and it was the hero that saved this book for me, and was the primary reasoning for why I kept going with this one. I could have easily put this as a DNF, but I really wanted to give this book a fair chance and I truly needed to see Tristan find his HEA. I just wish that the heroine’s character hadn’t been so callous at times. However, I truly loved all the tropes that were blended well within this book and I truly think many contemporary romance fans will enjoy this one.

Overall, despite my issues, I found The Takeover to be a curl your toes sexy read that will deliver in multiple counts, from the high smexy times to the soft endearing moments, and will balance it all out with laugh out loud moments which in a combination will deliver to a satisfying read.

Gah, those high expectations do us in (almost) every time! I’m glad there was still plenty to enjoy of the story, despite the negative qualities of the heroine. Great honest review! ?

Lovely review! I haven’t read this one yet but I have “seen” Tristan in one of the other novels and loved him. So I’m with you…I would finish the book, even if the heroine grated on my nerves, just to see him get his HEA. 🙂 Glad the rest of the storytelling and plot worked for you!!

When you can’t connect or dislike one of the characters it really makes it hard to fall. So sorry it disappointed you.

That’s too bad about the heroine. I know a character who stayed hostile beyond reason would get to me, too.

I understand why you would be disappointed. It sounds like she didn’t grow throughout the story.
