In the early 19th Century, England and the Continent exercised enormous influence over fashion in America. Thomas Jefferson was elected the third President of the United States (1801–1809); major events during his presidency: The Louisiana Purchase in 1803; and between 1804 – 1806 Lewis and Clark ascended the Missouri to its source.
