From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews comes an enthralling new trilogy set in the Hidden Legacy world, where magic means power, and family bloodlines are the new currency of society…
In a world where magic is the key to power and wealth, Catalina Baylor is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, and the Head of her House. Catalina has always been afraid to use her unique powers, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, Catalina risks her reputation and safety to unravel the mystery.
But behind the scenes powerful forces are at work, and one of them is Alessandro Sagredo, the Italian Prime who was once Catalina’s teenage crush. Dangerous and unpredictable, Alessandro’s true motives are unclear, but he’s drawn to Catalina like a moth to a flame.
To help her friend, Catalina must test the limits of her extraordinary powers, but doing so may cost her both her House–and her heart.

Sapphire Flames is a book that has been on my list for quite a while and I even had a print copy on my shelf since it was first published in 2019 and yeah I know ….I KNOW it has taken me so long to get this book read but I finally did it and it was the audio version of this book. I have had a hard time wanting to pick up a mass market paperback to be honest, I am spoiled by my kindle. BUT I saw this available on my library database and it was the kick in the pants that I need to finally grab this one up here. And I had a blast with this book, I am not sure if it was just the story itself or if it was the talent of the narrator, but I just had so much fun with this story here.

Sapphire Flames is a story that begins with the second sister in the family, Catalina. She is the middle sister that is highly overlooked by society in many ways. Her older sister Nevada, is the one that shocked and delighted everyone. But Catalina, isn’t viewed as considerable. But now she is the head of the house and responsible for their welfare. With the help of her future love interest…..Alessandro, she is drawn towards a new case in the hunt for the killer of a mother of three kids who have all become orphans but now they want justice. Catalina wants to be able to do this on her own, but Alessandro keeps getting involved and Catalina doesn’t know if she is grateful or wanting him to leave her alone. Even though Catalina has had a crush on him for years, she knows he would never feel the same way about her. But there is a chemistry between them, one that she feels with every moment they are together. But what goes from a simple mission of finding a killer builds into a journey that Catalina never expected and the sacrifice she will make for those that she loves will cost her dearly in the end….

Sapphire Flames was a story that stunned me in its most simplest of ways and I never know what to expect from this duo author pair, I love what they deliver together and Sapphire Flames is a story that stunned me in many moments. I couldn’t get enough of seeing Alessandro and Catalina together. Those moments when the tension rises between them is beautiful and captivating, I was almost holding my breath every single time you saw these romantic moments that built their relationship. I am definitely intrigued to see where Ilona Andrews will build their relationship.

The characters that are built within this story are fascinating and I loved seeing the Baylor family come to the surface once again. It feels like forever since I have seen this fun family group and all their unique personalities just fit together despite their unique quirks and abilities. I love the closeness of this family unit but at the same time I admired seeing their differences come to the surface. We don’t see much of Nevada in this one but I have a feeling we will see much more of her in “Emerald Blaze” and I am definitely wondering how that will change the dynamics. I will say that after seeing Catalina in action and seeing more depths to her character, I think I am loving her more than Nevada. There is something so different about her, aspects that I relate to better. I find that she is more sensitive and relatable in many ways. She can kick booty and her special abilities of her own, but she also has these sweet vulnerabilities that I was so drawn to. Alessandro was a delectable hero, I loved how well he pairs with Catalina. He seems to never be put off by her resistance to him, he sees the humor in every situation and I love his flair for the dramatics at times, he tends to balance out the serious personality that is Catalina.

The plot of the story is action packed and I never knew what was around the corner of the story. This is a talent that this duo writing team excels at and anyone that has read them will understand exactly what I mean by that! They are a powerhouse together and I have to admit I fell in love with this story and the way they build up certain elements to draw the reader within the story in a way that is unique to their writing alone. I find the worldbuilding in the story to be stunning, there are so many depths to this world and I find being more and more intrigued with each book I read within it. There is a depth of magic and societal organization that will fascinate its reader and so intriguing the political dynamics that are displayed here. My only disappointment that I found with this story is that there is a cliffhanger. Yep you heard that right. Which was to be expected, but you can trust that I will be grabbing up Emerald Blaze very quickly here. I gotta find out what happens after such a breathtaking ending these authors delivered on.

Overall I found Sapphire Flames to be a stunning depiction of the journey of Catalina and Alessandro, their road isn’t going to be an easy one, but in this story we see the depths, the magical wit, the unique senses of creativity that is portrayed and the intensity that is bound to keep the reader on edge all the way through and will never disappoint…..a gravitating romance!

About Ilona Andrews

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.
