First in a brand-new series about the bold, brawny men of the Scottish Highlands—and the lovely lasses who bring them to their knees…
Highlanders are her weakness.
Hannah Dounreay has no time for suitors who only seem interested in her family’s land, which she manages as well as any man. If she marries, she wants to be loved for the educated, independent woman she is. But when a strong, silent—and spectacularly handsome—Highlander saves her from a violent attack, her heart is stirred. Who is this man? And if he asks for Hannah’s hand, will she be able to resist him?
Love is the most powerful weapon of all.
Alexander Lochlannach, Laird of Dunnet, has no time to lose. The Highlands are in an uproar as clans battle for land—without mercy—and Alexander can’t afford to fall for the wildly attractive, strong-willed Hannah. What’s more, he has a desperate secret, one that could destroy them both. But as their attraction turns into an all-consuming passion, Alexander has no choice but to prove to Hannah that he’s the only man for her—body and soul…
Hannah Dounrey, is only interested in helping with her family and their land and the upkeep. She wants to save herself for love and genuine affection in a marriage, and doesn’t want to settle for any marriage of convenience. But when she spies a mysterious Highlander, who following the games saves her from being raped, she is intrigued by this brooding silent kilted warrior. Alexander Lochlannach, who is the Laird of Dunnet, has vey little time to pick a bride. Currently, the highlands and the clans are in battle with each other, for land. The land Hannah’s family hold is precious and he needs it but he also has more than just land to want to marry this captivating beauty, who he can’t stop thinking about. Hannah agrees to their marriage, but soon upon arriving on Dunnet land, she becomes uneasy because Alexander is hiding something from her. He sends her only letters, hardly ever speaking, and keeping to his study most of the time. But when Hannah learns the truth of Alexander, love blossoms between them.
Alexander, is a fierce warrior and isn’t afraid to show it, however he has more than one challenge that keeps him from being as social as he normally would have liked. Alexander is the oldest of the brothers, when their father died and they were put in his uncle’s care, Alexander had to sacrifice himself to save his brother. Doing so, Alexander had to endure beatings of the worst sort and still suffers from the ghosts of the past. He struggles with talking and stuttering and is ashamed of it. Now I truly was endeared by Alexander. At first I wasn’t sure about him, he had this mysterious aura that intrigues you in the first few chapters but as you progress through the story you only want to get to the heart and core of this hero who ties you up in knots. I truly couldn’t get enough of Alexander, because he is a tortured hero who is quite compelling.
Hannah has never thought of herself like her sisters. She believes herself to be plain and ordinary and a bookworm. She is an educated woman that turns many men away. So when she finds a man she is intrigued by who seeks marriage, she says yes. She is intrigued by Alexander. Hannah isn’t shy, however, on showing what she needs and wants. She can be vocal when she needs to be. At the beginning of the book, she tended to leap to conclusions, and I really enjoyed seeing how she reacts to Alexander’s struggles. She definitely becomes a heroine you can love. I love her compassionate nature that is joined with being intellectual and independent. I did like how she had her own vulnerabilities.
Plot and Story Line
Hannah and the Highlander was a delightful surprise for me!! I honestly couldn’t put this book down once I had started it up. The first chapter really pulls the reader in, and to be frank you don’t see it coming until it happens and then you just want to see what happens between these two. They have some powerful chemistry, and their first kiss is definitely swoon worthy to make any reader melt. What I liked about the beginning set up of the story was seeing the mystery and intrigue you find in the characters and I just wanted more. As I settled into this story, I became even more intrigued with the setting that Sabrina York places in it. This is set in the 1800’s in Scotland, so we see the severe consequences of the “clearances” and York did a brilliant job with the historical aspects of this event in Scottish history. I knew about the clearances through the history books and other HR authors however York has done the best job in making these horrid truths come to life!! But I did feel that she balanced it out very well with the love story that takes place at the same time. We also get some fun interaction with Hannah’s sister Lana (who is awesome) and Alexander’s brother and another side character that brings out some various reactions in this reader: Lachlan Sinclair. The actual romance that we see happen between Alexander and Hannah is quite well written and just melted whenever these two were around each other. I loved the growth of their relationship and the challenges they face together.
“It was a harsh reminder that one never knew the true depths of another soul. A caution against passing judgment over another.”
I did like the twist that once they were honest with each other, then they fought side by side to stay together and keep their way of life and the people under their care safe from others who would destroy everything they have fought for.
I can’t get enough of this cover…its one of my personal favorites!! The setting is so romantic, with the sunset in the background and I love the bright colors here and what a sexy pose.
Hannah and the Highlander is a vividly portrayed romance that had me tied up in knots with bright emotion, accurately portrayal of historical events and a love story to captivate your heart!! AWE INSPIRING!
