The author of Wolf’s Fall returns with her “hot and to die for”* Alpha Pack—a top-secret band of Navy SEALs with Psy powers and shifter prowess whose dangerous missions sometimes require a more intimate call to duty…
Believed dead by his Pack mates, Micah Chase, a wolf shifter and Dreamwalker, was held captive for months, subject to tortures that left him physically scarred and emotionally unsettled.
Now under the care of the Alpha Pack’s doctors, he’s been prescribed an experimental healing drug, but he still can’t shake the nightmares. Even more damning is that Micah’s problems pose a danger to his team, and if he doesn’t get himself under control, they’ll all suffer a terrible fate.
There is a key to his salvation. Jacee is a beautiful coyote shifter, and though her kind is hated, she’s falling in love with a man whose very future is in her hands. Together they’ll face his personal demons as well as a deadly enemy—and for both of them desire has never come with such risk.

My Review

Summary

Micah Chase was taken, tortured and held against his will for months, which left him with haunting memories and being horribly scarred. As he slowly recovers, he is prescribed a certain drug that is to help with the healing of his body. But soon his body becomes dependent on it, even when it doesn’t help that much lately. But when he starts acting out in anger and frustration, his team is determined to help him. But Micah needs to be independent and to do things on his own. He then discovers his bond mate, Jacee and he knows that she is just what he needs, and even though he doesn’t want to be a burden to her, his wolf can’t resist being close to her. Jacee works at the local bar as a waitress and does what she can to survive. She is the last of her pack who were all killed. She is a coyote shifter, but when she finds her mate she will do anything to protect him. Jacee is the key to saving Micah, but there is a danger on the horizon, a danger Micah and Jacee won’t see coming, and only with help from the whole pack will they be able to defeat this new enemy who is out for revenge.

The Hero

Micah Chase joined the military and the special ops division. He loved what he does. His closest ties were to his mother and sister. But then he and his pack are turned into shifter wolves and their lives change forever. But Micah is taken hostage by a mad scientist and experimented upon, tortured and has had mind games played on him and he was forced to do certain things that still haunt him.

Demons were big bastards. Shut out their voices. Get underneath them. Avoid sharp objects. Go for a quick kill, head and heart. Easy. Like taking a sunday stroll.

Okay maybe not that simple

Micah is trying to make an effort to survive and to heal, but he doesn’t feel he is worthy of redeeming for all the things he was forced to do while being held captive. Micah is such a heartbreaking character, and I have always wanted to read his story. This is where we learn more of his side of things and how bad those months held in captivity really were. He is one tough wolf, he has this drive to fight and survive despite all the pain and anger he is dealing with. I loved how his strength really perseveres.

The Heroine

Jacee, is a coyote shifter and was part of a pack. But then while she was away, her pack and her family were murdered and she never knew what happened to them. Jacee works at the local bar and does what she can to survive until she can go back to college and find something she loves. She attends her garden faithfully and loves working with the earth. When Micah comes into the bar and protects her when a customer gets a bit too friendly, she realizes that they are mates. Jacee is a tough chick, and I loved her to pieces. She stands by Micah and supports him and I loved how she fights for them through the good and the bad. What I admired most about Jacee was her inner strength and fighting spirit. She doesn’t back down and no matter the obstacle faces it head on.

Plot and Story Line

Chase The Darkness is the seventh book in the series and what a fun ride this series has been so far!! I have really been loving it and Chase The Darkness has been a story I have been waiting for ever since we learned about Micah being alive. It opens up with Micah struggling with dreams he is having, which are really memories. What we see at the beginning of this story, is seeing the memories that are slowly returning to Micah as his healing progresses. But there are problems happening and his healing is taking longer than it should. Micah and Jacee soon meet and form a tight bond almost instantly. Even though they have just realized that they are mates, Micah wants to take it slowly with Jacee. Give her time, even against his wolf’s protests, doesn’t want to rush what they could have. I really admired that about Micah. He didn’t rush right in to claim her, he took time to show her he cared about her as a person and not just as his mate. And boy does he get super protective, especially when it comes to how the team treats Jacee. This was the only draw back to the story that really bothered me, and it shocked me. Because in the past books, you wouldn’t see them doing that at all. But basically the team treats Jacee like a slut and in a very bad way too. I couldn’t understand it, because quite frankly all of them have slept around ( a lot) its like suddenly they had this “double standard” mind set and that is a big pet peeve of mine. I really had a problem with how judgmental they were through most of the book, but Jacee she handles it in such a diplomatic way. And seeing how she deals with it really got me on her side real quick. Because she doesn’t let what they think bother her or affect her relationship with Micah and standing by his side when he needs her the most. Don’t you love a woman that stands by her man no matter what? The romance between Micah and Jacee was so well balanced and felt almost harmonized. The transition and the flow were so smooth you could barely notice. It was quite moving to see how deeply they are drawn to each other, and their emotional connection matches the physical one. Even though this book wasn’t my favorite installment, it had plenty of what I know J.D. Tyler has given us in the past. A passionate love story, excitement and danger around the corner, and a new villain to fight. And we also have a tiny sub plot between Nix and Noah. And we have been seeing this build over the books, and their book is next so I am super excited because Noah has played such a huge role in helping the team from book one. So yay to finally getting their book in about six months.

The Cover

This might be one of my favorite covers. I love the dark background, with the motorcycle, and even with a shirt on he is one sexy man….love how he just fills out the clothes so well.

Overall View

Chase, The Darkness is a satisfying and intense story that brings you closer to the Alpha Pack Team….full of suspense, mystery, a healing love with a kick of passion…what more do you need!! SOAKED UP EVERY MOMENT!!

He wanted so much to believe he had a future with his mate.

  • I love this series, too. Nick’s was my favorite story and even though I love others that one is hard to top for me. I enjoyed how accepting they are of their matehood in this one. It’s refreshing when that happens. I really, really, really want Blue to get a story.

  • This series has been on my TBR list for years, I just haven’t had time to check it out yet. Great review!

  • The slut shaming was horrid. i also thought they kind of glossed over or magically fixed issues. That being said—love my pack 🙂

  • Oh my “healing love” I like that ;D.

  • I’m glad to see you enjoyed this one more than I did. I loved the couple and how they were but had issues with everything else and especially the slut shaming. I still don’t get that at all. I really hope in the next one that’s not a part of the storyline.

  • Bea @ Bea’s Book Nook

The slut shaming sounds horrible and I hate when characters suddenly start acting out of character. 🙁 I haven’t read this series yet but maybe someday. I like the sound of the series overall.

  • This is a series that has been on my radar and I am glad to see you enjoyed this one. Not a fan of slut slamming but glad it all worked for the storyline.

  • Sold! Not keen on how his pack treated her as well – I wonder if the author has addressed that on her blog or something? Hmmm…. a good way to waste an hour looking for that info 😀 Great review!
